I heard that the DG is better than the STX for driving headphones, never heard them myself though.

Low impedance ones only because of output impedance.

The Xonar DG (& DGX) are just cheaper then the STX (& ST).
32-Ohm headphones on the DG(X) would not sound any better then the ST(X).
Portables with their lower impedance are a better choice for amplifing low Ohm headphones over Xonar cards.

thanks for all the info guys! i had just decided to go with the DT 990 Pro, but then i came across the AKG Q701's. Now i dont mind the price between these two, but the q701 is my limit (i can get them for $330AU brand new). I hear that the Q701's are nearly identical to the K701s, and that the 990 Pros are nearly identical to the 990 premium. Do you guys know which one would be better in terms of giving the "movie theatre" effect. Ill be using it for non-competitive gaming mainly, and music genres of pop n rap. Regardless of price any thoughts guys?

Much appreciated!!

Be reminded that it's better to invest in a decent amp/dac combo too squeeze out most of the DT990 and Q701's potential. And that would mean another $300+ to spend

Yep im going to be using them with an Asus Xonar STX, so i should be pretty close to their full potential. Any recommendations between the two?

Really?? :frowning2:

i read from Mad Lusts reviews http://www.head-fi.org/t/534479/mad-lust-envys-headphone-gaming-guide-updated-5-9-2012-he-4-and-dt990-pro-added

and this comparison done by chicolom http://www.head-fi.org/t/592630/akg-q701-vs-dt990-600-ohm-comparison-review

that the bass is quite good. Not the best, but still a very good bass hit. Would you say their bass is worse than 598s or 990 Pros??

I'm not sure about the STX, but the DT990-250Ohm sounds lean without an amp to me. And the K701 has very little bass out of my FiiO e7/e9 combo. Don't know about the Q701 though. The DT990 and Q701 are not ideal for starters IMO. My suggestion is either HD598 or ATH-AD700 for gaming since they have good soundstage, and they don't really need an amp to sound good. I've yet to see anyone complain about their gaming potential.

their bass is very good but its tad light, You wont enjoy it with those genre's (this is said in multiple places), and the Q701 is more enjoyable when compared to the rest.

If you want an AKG that pairs well with the STX get the K242HD or K240mkII (they can both be had for very very cheap) and the AD797 opamps for the I/V section of the stx, this **** will blow your mind.

To me my DT990 Pro 250-ohm do have the "movie theater" sound.
Full bass, full treble, nice sound stage, the bass and treble can overshadow the vocals to some, but the vocals are clear.
What source(s) are you going to be plugging your headphones into?

why do you guys think those headphones will serve me better? Nearly everywhere i read the 990pro and q701 are better than the DT880 and k242HD in bass, sound stage, imaging and quality. How would they do a better job if you dont mind me asking?
