Sennheiser HD 419/429/439

Hi guys, my first post in the forum:wink:

I'm looking to buy a closed headphone merely for gaming, and a bit of music. (I own a Creative X-Fi Xtreme Audio pci-ex card and use CMSS-3D in gaming)
I was looking in to buy the HD 439 from amazon, and then just happened to see the above ^^ graph. Looks like the 4xx series built on same hardware with some 'tweaks' to differentiate them.

I know a little bit about handling equalizers, so my question is can I get any one of them here and modify the EQ settings to get closer to what I want? Is there any difference in sound quality in these series?
What I want is a decent sound quality with clarity with right amount of (not muddy) bass (I know studio headphones sounds flat, and that's not what I want), which naturally enhances the sounds for everyday listening.

Right now 419 is 48$ where 439 is 73$. So is the extra +25$ worth it?

Thanks! This is a great forum!

p.s. My office mate has HD 418, its very clear, and sounds are well separated. But I guess it lacks a bit of bass...

aren't they all open or semi open headphones?

Yes they all sound different with improvements but I cannot comment on the bass each one has. If you are buying from Amazon, check out the camelcamelcamel.com price tracker. Last I saw was hd518 for $70-80.

Looks like the hd439 is discontinued. I would check out madlustenvy's gaming headphone thread as well.

Which of the HD 4xx series should I get? I like clear sound; not a lot of bass. I will be using them as a mixture of to go/mobile headphones and at home/computer headphones. I'm stuck between the 439 and the 449, but maybe one of the others will be better? I am a huge fan of Sennheiser and have always had good luck with them.

I currently have a pair of Skullcandy Hesh 2s, but I am not a huge fan. I don't like the brand, because of their terrible quality (even though I've had this pair for over a year. None of my other pairs have lasted longer than 6 months, and I got these Heshs for free under warranty from another pair). They also don't look so hot; I'm a fan of Star Wars, but I don't like having Leia buns on my head.

Despite that, I am open to other suggestions. My budget is no more than $100.

I tried the 439, and quite like the sound. Comparing it to the 518, I prefer 439's bass. I find it to be less boomy than 518. I'm also considering 419 since both have velour pads and detachable cable, but no shop has it for audition. Anybody can advise the difference between 419 and 439?

The 419 are a more punchy kind of phone, with a little more responde on some high frequency as well. The 439 is more of an bass house with linear response. I would buy almost all Sennheiser phones because of there detailed diferences. The 419 for Punchy and closed, the 439 for outdoor clean, the 558 for a more hesh open sound and the 598 for complete clarity. 419 and 439 definily the best budget phones of Senns.

I can confirm this.

HD 419 also have good soundstage considering the price.

With HD558 sitting around $100 I'm not sure why anyone bothers.

The main thing is that the 400 series is for mobile with Closed spectrum. It's what I use to go outside (419 and 439), as I don't what to expended bags of money in the Momentum (I live in ****hole Brazil mind you). I would never use the HD558 and HD598 in the Subway, especilly here where they cost 800R$ and 1200R$.
