Welcome to Head-Fi, Ctn!

Comparing the two is like comparing apples and pears. The Sennheiser HD 570 is an open-air circumaural headphone that sounds bright (slanted more towards the highs), while the Sennheiser HD 265 is a closed-cup circumaural headphone that has a very dark, practically muddy presentation (i.e. too much midbass and not enough highs). It's up to you as to which type of sound do you like, but IMHO neither is neutral-enough sounding for everyday listening.

What's the price of the HD-580 in your area? It's a FAR better, more neutral device than either that you mentioned. It has REAL, extended bass, not the overly bloated bass of the HD-265 Linear, and is MUCH smoother than the HD-570. And it (the HD-580) is selling most places for under 200 (US) dollars. So I wouldn't even consider one of the other, LESSER Sennheisers!

Unfortunately there is no Senn 580 where i live (in Oz)
frown.gif

next 1 up is the 600 which is far more than i can afford atm...
about 700 aussie bux
biggrin.gif

the 570's r 270 bux (exchange rates is about 51c)
im guessing the 580 would b about 400 bux aussie.
Is this a good price?

btw what do u mean by sounding smoother Mike? does this mean that the 580's sound is more subdued than the 570?

i think im gonna call the shop up and see how much the 580's r

Not necessarily; what that means by "smoother response" means that there are no noticeable sharp peaks in the 580's frequency-response curve, compared to the one or two sharp peaks in the treble for the 570's. And those treble peaks can contribute to hearing fatigue.

Eagle Driver is exactly right about what I meant by "smoother". So since he made that point, I'll address the idea that the HD-580 is "discontinued". Actually your dealer can be forgiven for believing this, as it WAS true. Sennheiser intended to discontinue the HD-580. They even removed it from their literature and website. But a funny thing happened. The 580 was so beloved (as was the MDR-V6 when Sony tried to replace it about 7 years ago) that they (Sennheiser) changed their minds. The HD-580 IS a current model, back in the lineup, and on the website and literature. It IS NOT DISCONTINUED! And the HD-590 (despite it's model number) IS a sizable step down from the HD-580 in my opinion (and the opinion of others whom I respect)

Well, CTN, what Sony earbuds do you have? Low-end Sony earbuds are notorious for their harsh treble. The Senn 590 - which I currently own - have a couple of peaks in the extreme treble, with mids that are obviously recessed compared to those of some other phones that I've heard. Those recessed mids are what made Mariah's voice sound a bit "distant".

*Sigh*

CTN, if I were you, I woulda just gotten the HD495's, and started saving up for the HD580's if I liked the Sennheiser Sound.....

*sighs again*

Whacha gonna be driving these headphones out of? Most Senns need some POWER to sound good...

im not too really sure what sony earbuds
they r black with a black-silver-black long bit
very sleek looking
sounds very nice heaps of bass n treble

btw what is this i hear about burn/break in?
is there some truth to this?

coz i know that burn in for computers/electornics r pretty much fake.

i think i'll start saving up for the 600
biggrin.gif

im addicted to good sounding audio now hehe

Look on the plug and the earpiece for the number....

And, yea, many audio components change over time....and your ears get used to them.... either of which is burn in....

it doesnt say on the sony earbuds

it was about 100 bux aussie when i got it about a few yrs ago.
sounds very nice..has saphire coating.

should i burn/break in my pair of senns
biggrin.gif

if so...how should i go about it?

on another note is the 590s suppose to crackle/pop at high frequencies? im listening to celine dion's falling into you cd and it does it one some tracks (the left more than the right channel)

thanx !!
