A friend sent me some links for the Philips DVP900SA, and while a bit more expensive (about 600USD), it seems pretty interesting. It's 24/192, HDMI, supports SACD but apparently not DVD-audio. Weird, seeing as it is a dvd player. Whatever. As my friend indicated, it looks like the Music Hall Maverick. Pretty slick in any case. I think it is available in black too.
Anyway, the links:

I have heard that Yamaha bought the 963SA construction. Check out the new Yamaha DVD-S1500! It has exactly the same specs as 963SA but it also plays DVD-audio. Even the remote control looks the same.

Philips never did support DVD-Audio. They are supporters of sacd format along with Sony. The 963sa did not play DVD-A discs.

He's talking about the internals, not the external case "construction." Yamaha is using Philips' internals in their next budget universal player - look at the remote in the picture of the Yamaha. It looks EXACTLY like a Philips remote but black.

That 900SA looks awfully nice. I've been out of the loop for a long time, so I didn't even know the 963SA was out of production. As the search function is currently disabled, can anyone clue me in as to why Philips shelved the 963SA?

It's just time for a new one. I think they're going to incorporate more improvements relating to quality (or I hope they do).

Looks like this is an exciting time to be in the CDP market. With all the announcements and releases the price keeps going down, and the sound quality up. Very nice for us.

Another reason that I have heard is that it was too much player for what they charged. They wanted to come out with a new high end one that is at a higher price.

Ah that makes sense. They realized there was more profit to be made out there... better shelve it so that they can cash in on those of us who haven't bought it yet. Fine by me if they make enough improvements to warrant the additional cost.
