Q701 impressions thread

That 3db lift at 2k went straight for my throat. I guess I must be sensitive to that frequency. I actually managed to eliminate it in JRiver. Now I've bought the HD650's and I'm on pause now. The Senn's pair well with my brain I guess. Smooth.

Ahh why did you go for the HD650 over the HD600? I'm thinking on getting an HD600 as an upgrade to my 558's

I think the 650 for me has been a massive leap in sound quality. It's like 3D music. Not having to put up with Torquemada's head vice is a bonus :)

Did you just buy the HD650? Congrats, you officially have the Head-fi bug

Yes, I needed a change. I wasn't prepared for just how much of a shock it would be. I'm done buying for a bit. Although next up is either a new DAC or possibly a valve amp.

A bottlehead Crack would be nice(it's a diy tube amp)to go with your HD.

I know, I've seen that said many times. Perhaps in my next life - wherein I plan to be an electrical engineer instead of the van driver I am in this - I'll build one. But I think Schiit might be getting my money.

Try WA6 for that HD650. I'm not the world's biggest HD650 fan (in fact I hated it), but when I heard it paired with a WA6 I was totally mesmerized.

I'd like one as well but I'd prefer it built by someone more expert than me (D. Duck, M. Mouse, Goofy...).

I've heard they are less detailed than the Q's.. is that true?

HD600 are a warmer, mellowed sounding headphone, since they have less treble energy, they tend to sound less detailed.

I think they have at least as much detail, if not more. It's just that it's presented in a very relaxed way. When I've looked at reviews before I saw people commenting on how laid-back they were and I mis-read that as lazy & slow. Nothing of the kind! I have yet to find a significant genre (for me) that isn't done better by the Senn's.

That's not what this thread is about though. The big advantage the Q's have is their massive soundstage which the HD650's don't even attempt to recreate. I imagine with large orchestral pieces the AKG's might be in their element. I don't listen to this style of music though.

Hi guys, I had Astro A40's with the Mixamp but upgraded to AKG Q701's, My problem is the comfort of the AKG Q701's earpads they are nothing like the Astro A40's in terms of comfort is there any softer pads out there that I could buy for the AKG Q701's? thanks.

I believe the K712 pads are much comfy with memory foam but they're not angled like the Qs.

I had similar impressions when I examined the HD650. But I have also noticed that bass, while plentiful in quantity, was quite loose. The Q701 bass is much tighter, even after the bass port mod.

Possible that this depends on the amp (I checked with NFB-5 and WA7 and both gave me similar results), but this may be worth checking when considering the purchase.

My HD558's are that way too.
