I need help looking for a pair of headphones. I want headphones for alternative/rock music. My price range is anywhere from $250-$400. Here are some bands I listen to if it helps:
Nirvana, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Smashing Pumpkins, etc.

Closed ear is preferred, along with some sort of portability. I would also gladly appreciate a pair of headphones without the use of an amp

  Look into the Sony MDR 7520.

Although I have not heard them, the newish NAD VISO HP50 has received outstanding reviews.

hahaha oh noss... a recommendation w/o having heard em?? the horrorrrr =P

on the cheaper side, ue6000 ($100), mdr-1r (sub-$200), akg k545 ($250 -> $200 sale from razerdogaudio)

within your budget: Sennheiser Momentum ($350 -> $300 sale from razerdogaudio) -> this will probably suit your requirements. people comparing the akg k545 against the HP50 here had favorable things to say about the akg k545 if you wanna save some ca$hmoney (http://www.head-fi.org/t/670709/akg-new-headphone-k545/585#post_10078792).

You don't need to go up to $400 on your headphones. You can easily get the "best-n-class" mid-fi portable closed headphones at $300. You can blow the last $100 on a dac/amp or something like this: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/11447722/rubber-band-machine-gun-0

fcukingg baller status!!! if anyone tries to come steal your headphones, they are toastiee!
