Oppo PM-1: A New Planar Magnetic Headphone!

The response in the midrange is balanced, with a very small (less than 3dB) boost at 3kHz and 6kHz. It's as flat a response as you could hope for.

Vocals do sound very present and realistic. I suspect that is because of extremely low distortion through that range.

If you or anyone else is confused about the technical details, then isn't it worth it for participants to elucidate? I thought this thread was a general discussion of the PM-1, not merely an impression thread.

I made my post before I moved the second round of measurement discussion to the main thread and re-opened it. No problem now.

I found the measurements now.

That frequency response graph is pretty much exactly what I found in the tests I did by ear with tone sweeps. I'm betting that distortion figure is an artifacting of overdriving slightly. At a more reasonable volume level, it might just disappear. It's a very narrow range. I didn't detect it at all in my listening.

To those who don't think specs can tell you how a headphone sounds... These specs are a textbook example of a headphone that doesn't have a sound. Neutral, accurate, clean. You really can't ask for more. And that's exactly how these cans sounded to me in my listening to music with them.

THD 0.1% for sound level pressure of +120dB (ref 2 X 10 -5 Nm-2) at 1kHz, and +104dB at 200Hz.
Is this any good? (Frequency is pretty flat from 35 to 20K c/s)

If it is, ....it's for Wharfedale Isodynamics headphones, 1970s!

The original Planars.

As to the inflated cost in Europe: well, in these days of World travel, we'll just have to get friends to pick some up in USA.

Not that I fancy going myself ever again!

The sound quality is quite reminiscent of the ID1..Flat, smooth sound. To me thisis  high praise for I hold that headphone in very high regard. Except the PM-1 has much better resolution (atleast over the stock ID1) without the midbass bump (With the perforated pads atleast) , and no where near as hard to drive. Is also built superbly and looks no where near as ugly as the ID1s.

I don't understand why there are two separate threads for the same headphone... but,
Does anyone have both the PM-1 and Beyerdynamic T1?  If so, can contrast and compare them?

Haven't heard them side by side, but when I did hear the T1 back when it came out, I found it mediocre even compared against vintage orthos. The T1 is mediocre by any means. Then again am biased towards planar magnetics so you are probably better served by someone more objective than I am..

Ok, I've had mine running in for 24 hours now and I spent approximately 3 hours today listening to them - both critically and casually. I'm bald, with a big head and large ears. Generally speaking, I'm very sensitive to issues of comfort and fit. I have found the Audeze line utterly unwearable - for more reasons than I care to describe. The PM-1 is, in a word, sumptuous. It's absolutely a delight to look at and it vanishes when on my head. The sound? Good.....maybe great. At least very enjoyable. But ironically, all I can think of after 3 hours on my head is how good they make my HD-650s sound and feel. That is NOT what I expected.

Are you saying HD650 sounds better?

I'm not willing to say "better" after just 3 hours of listening. No two of us could even completely agree on what "better" really means. But I'm very surprised how similar their sound signatures seem to me. At more than 2x what I paid for the HD650 that's pretty tough to swallow.

Yeah, I understand where you are coming from. Buying a thousand over dollars headphone is like buying a very expensive watch. You can get almost the same set of features at a fraction of the price if you were to buy a Seiko or Casino watch. Yet, there is still a market for it because people are just so ...... 'human'

Oh don't get me wrong - I'm completely guilty of the same human behaviors myself. I think I'm just disappointed because they're soooooo comfy that I really wished their sound was more unique or different from what I've already got. That way I wouldn't feel crazy having yet another set of $1k+ headphones lying around. I've only got two ears and one head to wear them all on.

The measured frequency response shows a treble roll off beginning at 9 kHz.  9 kHz is pretty low for a steep treble roll off.  When listening to these phones, did you hear anything corresponding to this treble roll off?

I measured the Oppos and the copy i had was as flat as dammit out to about 12.5kHz. That is well beyond the treble range.
