Official Ipod Video / Classic 5g+5.5g+6g+6.5g+7g SSD Mod thread

I should also add that the reason I finally decided to do the SSD upgrade was due to my iPod stopping working, from the noises coming from it it sounded like a Hard Drive issue. I'm thinking perhaps the logic board could also be knackered, despite the diagnostics test coming back green?

so guys, today i installed my 240 GB HDD on a 30 GB 5.5 ipod video. i have 19148 songs on it and 80 GB free out of 223
im surprised that it works pretty well, i remember people saying it will stop working in a certain amout of songs but it seems to work without problems in my case, and i use stock firmware(iTunes).

is it because i do not use playlists and this problem accure only with playlists??
the logic board with 32MB seems to handle it pretty good.

Hi guys, just made an account but I've following this thread for about a year. Would really appreciate some help trying to get this mod working!

Anyways I bought a Crucial 128GB SSD and SSD to 40 pin zif adapter as the hard drive in my iPod 7G failed. After formatting the drive to FAT 32 I put it in the iPod but its not being recognized and I'm getting a sad face.

So then I tried the SSD drive into an iPod 5.5G which is working fine and it still isn't getting recognized and producing a sad face.

As far as I've read the SSD should definitely work in the 5.5G right? What else can be wrong? All I can tell is the adapter or the connections(which I've double checked).

Anyone got any ideas?

Just in case you haven't,  Try formatting the SSD using OSX Disk Utility -- Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and 1 Partition.  Install mSATA making sure Battery Ribbon, Power Switch/Headphone plug ribbons are aligned and securely fastened.

Looks like I'll be in the market to do this mod more seriously soon.  My 7th gen has vanished which is really annoying as I had just spent the last week sorting out all the tags on it.  I'm praying I've left it at work but got a feeling it's on walkabout.

I know I asked earlier but didn't really get a solid answer.  There should be no reason why a 30 gig 5th gen video wouldn't work for the msata mod would there?  Would I also need to get a new 80 gig back cover for depth or is that not necessary?  30 gig videos are about £20 cheaper here so that's why I'm looking at it.  But if I need to get various parts then I  might as well stump up for a nice one.

Also how would I identify a 5 or 5.5 gen?

Cheers

Cheers for that.

Thankfully I'd left my ipod by accident at work under the desk.  For once an honest cleaner handed it in to my supervisor.  I think right now I'm going to either just swop the hard drive for a 240 myself or buy a pre made one off ebay (rather nice 5.5 gen with new everything) and sell the 7th to off set the cost.  Prices in the uk are still a little on the high side for me to really justify it.

Cheers

Latest update on mSATA and RB issue from Trone ....

"The communication with the SSD is completely unreliable no matter what I do, it seems; data are corrupted randomly and writing rarely works, and even the basic identifying information about the SSD such as the model name is corrupted randomly when read :/

I need to do some more experiments, but it's really not obvious what the issue is here.
"

I've had a few private emails with Torne and his opinion is that it's a fundamental problem with the adapter for the mSATA. I used this adapter,

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009BA5JU6/ref=pe_175190_21431760_M3T1_SC_3p_dp_i1

so if anyone finds a different one that does't simulate Toshiba/Hitachi it would be worth investigating.

I ordered this adapter and the 256GB mSATA card which I should be receiving tomorrow.

I can go ahead and buy other adapters to test them with the 5.th generation and the 7th generation iPods, just need help with resourses/links where I can get different adapters to test.

(Not much time now to browse the internet)

Hi guys, new to the forums and am extremely curious about modding my 6.5g iPod Classic 120GB with an SSD. I read through the whole thread and learned quite a bit. Has anyone tried putting in a 480GB+ mSATA SSD in there?

I found one on Newegg at a fairly reasonable price:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226379&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleAdwords&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-_-pla-_-Internal+SSD-_-N82E16820226379&gclid=COiQ4N-u0LYCFS9dQgodvnUA7Q

And I am planning on using the same mSATA to ZIF adapter everyone is linking to. I will be attempting this myself once I'm able to afford it comfortably; just wanted to see if anyone else had tried this yet.

Cheers!

Hi

As far as I am aware the 6g 120 is the worst one to mod.  I THINK you may be better off with a tarkan adapter and a cf up to 128 but that wouldn't give you much of a space increase I'm afraid.

Cheers

Hi! I need a cheap replacement for my ipod video 5.5g 30gb (slim). I searched and found this:

http://www.ebay.es/itm/1-8-1-8-32GB-ZIF-ZIF2-SSD-32-GB-Sony-ux-tz-Fujitsu-Latitude-/300690227937?pt=US_Internal_Hard_Disk_Drives&hash=item460288c2e1#ht_6198wt_952

I've read in this thread that a 128gb kingspec wouldnt work, but nothing about this cheap 32gb version.

It seems it meets the requirements: 3,3v, same measures as the original, zif interface... am I missing something?

Thanks in advance!

Specs wise it should work, keep us posted on how the upgrade using that drives goes.

Hi! One more question, some ssd's are marked just as "ZIF" and others as "PATA ZIF". All "ZIF" will work? or it must be "PATA ZIF"? (because the kingspec is marked just with ZIF)

I want to be sure before I buy it :S

Thanks in advance!
