pretty sure it would work up to an extent. you wouldnt be able to use all that storage. it will have issues if its filled that much,

RAM:
5G 30gb iPod Video Board: 32mb
5G 60gb iPod Video Board: 32mb
5.5G 30gb iPod Video Board: 32mb
5.5G 80gb iPod Video Board: 64mb

For some reason though, their is a difference between each of the board in the 5.5G line as opposed to the previous models of iPod Video's. If the 5.5g board and the 5g board of the 30gb iPod Video's were the same, then you'd be able to have the Search feature on both devices, but you can't. Only on the 5.5G iPod Video's can you have that feature on the stock OS.

all 5.5G iPod Videos can handle a 240gb HDD, but obviously one will handle it better than the other. Also, I only have tested this with the stock OS, not Rockbox

OK this issue is beyond the confusing part already.

an info i found states:

- 30GB has a 32MB RAM chip, 60/80GB has a 64MB RAM chip.

820-1763-A motherboard can have 32MB RAM or 64MB RAM.
The 30GB 5G iPod uses the 820-1763 board with 32MB RAM while the the 60GB 5G iPOd uses the 820-1763 motherboard with 64MB RAM.

The 5.5G iPods use the 820-1975-A motherboards.
The 30GB 5.5G iPod uses a 820-1975 board with 32MB RAM. The 80GB iPod uses a 820-1975 board with 64MB RAM.

i dont know what to believe anymore >.<

You're both correct.

The 5.5 G has search and the 5.0 G doesn't because that's the function Apple put in the firmware The motherboards for each generation have different cache sizes but are otherwise identical. It doesn't mean the older iPod is physically incapable of search, or that it's an indication of how large a drive it can support. It only means that there's no programming to provide search, and that the iPods with smaller hard drives have smaller caches.

so in the buttom line, the 60GB ipod is a 5th generation - NOT video and therfore doesn't support search. but does  it have 64 or 32 MB RAM?

All 5 G and 5.5 G iPods are video iPods. Some 4 G iPods were available with 60, have color screens but do not play video.

Apple has a table of all iPod models with links to details about each. The 5.5 G is referred to as "iPod (5th Generation Late 2006)".

(Edit: To directly answer your question: The 30 GB iPod Videos all have 32 MB cache. The 60 GB and 80 GB iPod Videos all have 64 MB cache. As far as I can tell, the boards are all swappable; you can swap boards between any two iPod Videos (5 G and 5.5 G), since aside from the cache and the specifics of the board revision, they're all physically compatible with each other. They are not physically compatible with 4 G and earlier, nor 6 G and later)

If this is true then I am sorry if I misled anyone. I rather be saying something has less than it does than saying inaccurately that it has more than what it does. I was not aware of this and everything I had looked into in the past never seemed to even mention the use of a 60gb for the 64mb onboard RAM.

This reference says the 60 GB has 64 MB on board.

Keep in mind what the cache is there for. It's a buffer to ensure that the audio/video playback has an uninterrupted stream of data to decode, in case the storage unit stutters or momentarily fails (eg, long seeks, bad blocks, physical impact dislodging the read head). The 32 MB buffer is good for about 3 minutes of uncompressed lossless audio, 6 minutes of compressed lossless audio, and even more of lossy audio data like MP3 or AAC. That is, it will ensure uninterrupted playback if the hard drive is completely offline for three minutes.

If you're using an SSD, read speeds are higher, are not affected by data fragmentation and unaffected by physical shock. The size of the buffer is not really relevant, because the small one is plenty. Don't worry about it too much.

Thanks man, you've been a great help!

EDIT:  i read that the only place where the amount of RAM matters is when having around 20k+ tracks or watever(im not sure about the figure)  with the stock IOS, iTunes and such...
though it tends to be not of great importance when using rockbox.
cound anyone confirm?

Besides, i also read that the 5.5gen ipod got better sound qulity than 7th gen. but if i would like to mod the 5th gen 60gb which has 64MB RAM. how would the SQ be comparing to the other two generations?

Really thanks for your help!
Can you tell me more detail about the issue? or is there any post i can look into for more information?
will the 256G mSATA SSD work perfectly with a 5.5G ipod than a 5G ipod?

btw, do you guys know any details about 256G mSATA SSD on a 7G ipod? have anyone tried that?
and i am also interested in the compatibility between a 512G mSATA SSD and a ipod whatever gen it is. i think mSATA SSD will be more and more popular and the price will decrease in the future. any experience of the mSATA SSD mod on a ipod will be very useful for new comers. think about a ipod with 250+ or 500+ gig storage.

Thanks to all in this thread, as I have taken my old 5.5G 30GB iPod and upgraded it via Tarkan board, CF adapter, and SD card to a 128GB solid state player.  I started with a 32GB CF card, then moved to the SD card solution with a brief stop at 64GB but always wanting more space.

I'm running Rockbox now and loving it.  The eq capabilities are amazing -- I just have to be careful not to make all 10 bands active as then the player UI gets *really* slow when playing back Apple lossless files.

Anyways, I think this matrix needs to be adjusted slightly (?'s added), because from Tarkan's latest update (19 March), it looks like 256GB is possible via a CF card adapter.  From

As always, format to FAT32 using the HP card formatting utility which removes all pesky small partitions before doing the iTunes restore and the Rockbox install...

jazzman7 - Can you let us know the specific CF adapter and SD card you used for this mod? Also any noticed difference in speed (read and write) and battery life comparing with the CF card solution you had before?

Thanks
