True. Rockbox does not mediate file transfers. I thought you intended to transfer to the unit without removing storage.

For the person with multiple iPods i would mention that those units are more sensitive to impedance than more modern units like a FIIO in my experience.

So here's a weird issue:

Have 400 albums ripped. iPod is only showing 397. I've cleared my library and tried putting a folder at a time on my iPod and all albums show when I put 1 out of the 8 base folders in my library. But when I put the root folder with my base folders it shows 400 albums ib iTunes but only 397 on my iPod. Anyone have any idea?

Check if you have an Artist named Unknown or albums called Unknown.

Compilations?

I'm still curious to know how much the shorter battery life of the 5/5.5 gens vs 6/7/7.5 gens is down to the different drives, and how much to the circuitry itself.  I.e. how much difference is there in battery life if they use the same media?

I did tests using a fully charged 2000mAh battery in a Takan mSata TeraPod - one was a 5.0 and one was a 5.5 gen. Everything was the same, except the board version. I charged for at least 24 hours before the tests, and conducted four tests for the 5.0 and three tests for the 5.5gen board. On average, the 5.0 board ran for 13.3 hours before shutting down, with a range of 10.2 to 17.5 hours. The 5.5 board lasted for 16.3, 22 and 26 hours before the TeraPod shut down. For the 26 hour test, the iPod locked up while I was in line at international customs, so I had to estimate when it stopped. I played the same music for all tests. Within the observed variability, but i am comfortable the 5.5gen is verifiably more efficient than the 5.0.

Thanks - useful information - I think that might be the first (or only?) time someone's rigorously tested that!

Though I was wondering about the 7.5gens - though if 5.5 is an improvement on 5.0 that does at least imply there very likely is a further improvement with the later gens (and the 40 hour vs 15 hour stated capacity of the stock models isn't solely to do with more efficient hard drives)

I agree, though I've never tested the 7th gens with an mSata configuration rigorously.

Compilations?

I have a few compilations that are 1 disc compilations.

So I have my base directory with 8 sub-directories

Base
     Sub 1
     Sub 2
     Sub 3
     Sub 4
     Sub 5
     Sub 6
     Sub 7
     Sub 8

If I put a Sub in my iTunes library individually, the album quantity on iTunes and on the iPod match.  When I clear my iTunes library and put the Base directory in my library shows 400 albums but on my iPod it shows 397.  All files have been ripped via 1 program.

I'm running test right now with a new battery and 5th 30GB (HDD is new) then same battery in a 7th 160GB (maybe with same 30GB HDD).

Test from last weekend shows that the black battery sold on eBay will last about 33h in a 7th 160GB and the battery isn't even new.

I'm still running the test, 5th gen 30GB is done, now 7th with same battery and same 30GB HDD and till now the 7th gen runs 2x longer as 5th.
and I can say the 5th is power hungry MoFo :)

audiophalus, the battery test that you are doing is very interesting and informative. Would you please tell us if you are using the Rockbox interface or the Apple original OS whilst conducting these tests?

Also are you keeping the earphone in the iPod at all times, thereby generating sound out, or leaving the iPod run without earphones plugged in?
