Actually, the 3DS should be much better.
I've been searching the web and from the looks of it, either Nvidia's Tegra 1 or Tegra 2 chip should be on board.
So... that means at least Gamecube (iPhone 3GS) level graphics and at the most an experience nearing the original Xbox. Oh, and the sound quality should be much better compared to the old DS's crystal radio sound.
Here's a few numbers to have a peek at:
* Nintendo 3DS: Nvidia Tegra 2 = 90 million triangles/sec
* Motorola Droid: TI OMAP3430 with PowerVR SGX530 = 7 million(?) triangles/sec
* Nexus One: Qualcomm QSD8×50 with Adreno 200 = 22 million triangles/sec
* iPhone 3G S: 600 MHz Cortex-A8 with PowerVR SGX535 = 28 million triangles/sec
* Samsung Galaxy S: S5PC110 with PowerVR SGX540 = 90 million triangles/sec
* Gamecube: 20 million triangles/sec
* PS2: 30 million triangles/sec
* Xbox: 125 million triangles/sec
* PS3: 250 million triangles/sec
* Xbox 360: 500 million triangles/sec
lol. And here's another fact: The original DS could only pump a measly 2000 polygons per scene (or 120 polygons per second). In other words, S-L-O-W.
Personally, I have my bets on Tegra 2. It was announced a matter of a few months ago, so it would be fitting for it to have its star role on the DS.
