Hello, I have good news for AKG K701 fellas, that the new version of K701 is made without those bumps.

Here's the link : http://www.akg.com/K701-827.html?pid=1208

And I have confirmed with AKG itself via email, that this new version is genuine and is without bumps.

I want to buy it again.

I really hope they bring this classic back to being made in Austria.

But based on the picture on AKG's site, there's no made in Austria :frowning2:

Is there a big difference between the units manufactured in China and the ones manufactured in Austria?

I never had K701. AKG have said there should be no difference aside from the missing made in Austria in both box and the earcups. I just prefer the Austrian since it was made there and there's a peace of mind for me that I'm absolutely getting the originals. I have the K712 PRO which is made in Austria which is my very first AKG headphone.

I believe AKG is now making the K712 PROs in China since the K712 Pro pictures doesn't have the made in Austria on the earcups. Also, the cutsheet PDF only mentions engineered in Austria but no such thing as made in Austria.

Strange how they had to bring the old K701 back bump-free, while its newer brothers, the K702 and Q701, still have bumps on 'em.
its strange....I prefer the bumps by far, to my buddy's AKG's which have the flat headband.

I was finally lucky enough to try the two new heavyweights today (Sennheiser HD-800, and AKG K-812) and they are both gorgeous gorgeous sounding headphones.

But alas, they're both similarly too gorgeous.

What I mean by that, is that they have noticable dips around 2khz-2.5kkz (the shrill frequency range humans find sonically dissonant), and both have slightly heavy bass, as well as a fair amount of "beautiful" 2nd and 3rd order harmonic distortion. (Which is universally pleasing to the human ear)

So while these two are literally the most pleasant and beautiful sounding headphones I've ever heard. They're not of use to me. As a recording engineer and sound designer, I need the clearest, most uncolored, least harmonically distorted, and detailed tool I can own.

And thankfully, I already owned it :) (my trusty K-701)

I was glad I could save my $1500 !

Thank you head-Fi !

I am not familiar with 701. But for 702, the “made in china” version has no bumps and has been reported to have better physical quality on average.:)
That's a shame... Are new k-701's being made in China ?

Mine are made in Austria and I would hate to see any perceptible loss in clarity or quality amongst newer batches once mine finally die off twenty years from now.

Is this confirmed ?

I simply can't believe anyone saying that manufacturing in china could NOT inherently produce a dip in quality from that of Austria.

Not being racist or anything, but the axis powers seem to consistently produce quality like no other lol.

Axis Powers? D00d, what about the US of A? I believe you've forgotten something.
