What are the SS amps that's giving this color you don't like.  Most SS amps should be more on the neutral side.

I guess I've not tried a good ss, plus I had opa2227s in my portable amps which [despite costing $50 n $100 each] didn't sound as nice as my cheaper tube hybrids
 
I suppose I like colored amps, and neutral cans [since they pair nicely]
 
I like the tube sound, thick tubes and thin tubes are VERY different, and out of the same amp. I liked my mad dogs with my Rca Clear Top [which is a neutral tube [still a tube though]]
 
But ss treble is disappointing, not to mention the mids lack those even harmonics 
 
But, I do enjoy the tightness of Solid State Bass [although again the Hybrid Tube I ahve with mah Clear top tube has nice tight bass] 
 
Again, I never got a good ss so I switched to a tube in the same price braket and loved em

Oh I do like ss Dacs, I will NEVER own a Tube DAC, because I want my dac to be neutral. N that is because I amp with tubes <3
 
Still, even with mah clean odac n my clear top tube Mad Dog had to much mids, and it was underpowered on my ss portable amps

^^ I'd say that the Asgard 2 is a very good solid state amp at an attractive price point. And works well with the MD and most other HP's.

For the money and if your a solid state users these things are GREAT, and they isolate awesomely! Heck these are on my Can list, I was a PROUD owner of these. When I get my BIG Tube in I might try again [or maybe I'll get a O2 Amp and see how that works]
 
Still Mad dogs are great closed cans, just not for tube lovers. 
 
And for the record, replacing the mad dogs brought me to the ath w1000x

At home, I definitely use my Mad Dogs more with tubes that solid state.  Although, that's with a Decware Taboo (all tube) and a Cavalli Liquid Glass (tube/SS hybrid) which most likely sound very different from your amp(s).

That always good to hear.  I've already got another confirmation of this, but when I get these I'll be using them with a small speaker amp...we're looking at 8-10W with an in-line resistor.

It amaze me how a simple change of pads can alter the sound of the overall headphones.  Made me think that is the reason why certain headphones look and shape the way how it is.  Your description of how you want the mad dog sounds like what I wanted with the Mad Dog except I find the bass to be fine, maybe a little bit more impact.
 
a woodie mad dog, now that is a thought. Although I would imagine it would be harder to do base on the shape of the ear cup, rises in certain area of the cup, attachment of the arm, and the hole for the wire connector and all. I'm not a specialist in mods, so just speculation.  I do like the sound of woodies though, so I can see your attraction to the W1000X although I don't really like the wood they chose just slightly plain.  If it had wood like the the W3000 Anv with the same price, I would be all over it.  I hope when you get your W1000X, the mids will sound somewhat like an ortho such as the Mad Dog.  As I find the mad dog mids pretty darn good.  But then again, I can see the At mids will sound fine, as I always have a thing for AT's mids.

Well, great news.  The pads arrived ahead of schedule, they got here in record time, so as of today all orders will be Alpha Pads and we'll ship the pads we owe people by Monday.

Can someone please measure the inside dimensions of the Alpha pads. The space where the ears have to fit in. Not the depth, but the width and length.
I want to be sure my big ears have enough room with the Alpha pads before buying.

I measured from inside stitching to inside stitching. Width: 2 inches.  Height: 2 1/2 inches

There already is a wooden T50RP mod called Thunderpants (not made by MrSpeakers), but they seem to have a very colored sound signature that does not fit well with the signature of the Mad Dogs. I like the neutral approach (as in Mad Dog) more since it fits very well if you listen to a wide arrange of music genres. And I don't think that a wooden cup would make the Mad Dog any more neutral than it is.
