Want to check out something sophisticated, intelligent, well-written, nuanced, and meaningful in metal? Check out Years Past Matter by Krallice.

This is one of the best albums I've heard in years. It's so dense with intricacies, subtle details, and nuanced song writing. If you've felt alienated by metal because of its all too often bone-headed character, check this out. The arrangements are quite impressive, and it's nice to hear a bassist that really adds to the mix instead of just laying down a low-end so the album doesn't sound empty. The vocals aren't amazing, and at times I find the drums to be too "trashy" sounding, but the technical proficiency of the guitarists and bassist is something else. I generally find a lot of post/progressive metal to be long-winded, and a big pretentious, but this album is chalked full of meaningful expression.

It took me about five or six listens to get into it, but once it 'clicked' I have been astonished by the songwriting.
