first, sorry for my english (i'm french)

ok, so i must make a choice... after 1 week of research, i haven't found any argument for my choice.

they all seem to well sound.

some friends say me the philips isn't as good as it is said.
my brother have a koss, and he is satisfied of it.
and my old headphone was a sennheiser, and i like it since his death.

can you help me make a choice?

I remember MacDEF saying some stuff about the UR40 a while ago..

Indeed, here's the thread

I'm guessing these would be good headphones, but it all depends
on how you plan on using them. I see the Senns HD-497 recommended
a lot around here, so I guess these are good headphones too. It all
really depends on what you want in a headphone.

tiens un francophone, ca devient de plus en plus courant par ici.

Forget about the UR40, the Koss are overpriced in Europe. The hp890 are clearly in another league compared to the HD497 and have received rave reviews. They also look quite comfortable, comfort being the worst point of the HD497. The difference is that the senn will be portable, the philips are too big for a portable use.

If you can afford the philips, go ahead. American prices and European ones are different and the HP890 look like a bargain there.

I found an online store that sell the UR40 for $25. Pretty good deal
if not a steal

US only though..

I was wondering if anyone knew if there was a way to make these cans
completly closed? I know MacDEF said they were opened but I saw someone
make a suggestion (put a piece of rubber to cover the metal grille) but
he didn't update saying he did it or not.. I'd like to know because I might
buy a pair just for the heck of it.. and maybe use them as portable
cans. They're so cheap!

00940,

Have you actually heard both the Philips and the Senn 497? I'm interested on what basis you say they're in a different league. I like the 497 very much, but have been quite curious about the 890.

Where do you live btw?

Can't you see, itoine is French - so I'll assume that he's in France. Over there in Continental Europe, Koss is embarrassingly overpriced. How the screw do the official importers of Koss in the EC (European Community) charge the equivalent of $50 USD on the KSC-55? At the $20 price here in the USA, they are a good value. But $50 in Europe? Fuggittaboutit.

Likewise, $100 in Europe for the UR-40 is a ripoff.

I'm french too and not in France. Nor in Europe. Why do people always forget about Canada???!

On the other hand.. $100 for the UR40? I'll buy you a pair and ship them over
to wherever you live if you want a pair then.. Jesus!

Edit: I see where the confusion might have come from. People who speak
french say ''I'm french'' meaning they speak french, not that they come from
France.. Sorry about that. I know where here use that at least . . .

Then again, anyone saying "I'm French" may be living in certain parts of Canada. In that case, then the Koss 'phones may be somewhat expensive up there - but then Sennheisers are also expensive there.

davie, the HP890 is at least 20$ cheaper in Europe, I've seen it as low as 80 euros once. This to put things in perspective. Now, I didn't hear the HP890 directly against the HD497 in a similar setup. I had the HD497 for about a month and they bored me at the end, so I sold them to get some AKG K401. I had a quick listen to the HP890 at a friend house in Belgium during the Christmas vacation. The setup was bad, a poor sound blaster, but they sound good enough out of this to kill the memory I had of the HD497. At the time, i thought the philips were somewhere between the HD497 and the K401 for me, quite near of the K401 in term of sound quality. And for me, there is an huge gap between hd497 and K401

The build quality and the comfort are also to take in account, the senn are cheap looking. The HP890 are also nice because they didn't sound too bad out the soundcard. They fill nicely the gap between the HD497 and the HD590. Now, if you're in the us, have 110 bucks saved, plan to get an amp and want good sound, i would rather go for used HD580.

Jipi : qd qqn écrit je suis "francais'', il n'y a pas de doutes, il est de France. Il aurait écrit "je parle francais", il aurait pu etre canadien. En plus, les quebecois ont un bon anglais d'habitude. Itoine aussi

I continue to enjoy the 497 and have no problems with comfort or with build quality, which is cheap but (it seems to me) durable.

The 890s are closed, right? I'm still looking for the right closed headphone. People have said that they're closed but have an open sound. Also, do they fold up?

example..

).
Tu viens d'où au juste?
