Stuff the inside with some cotton, it may decrease midbass and soundstage if you stuff too much though.

It's been so long since I've compared the open version to the stock it's hard to say but I feel like I remember everything getting smoothed out a lot after opening them up. I definitely don't have any problems with the treble. Everything improved in my opinion.
