JVC HA-FW01 - The New Top End Wood Driver IEM (2017)
Feb 18, 2017 at 10:20 AM Post #121 of 780
The FW01 is excellent with a neutral-brighter source like the GO 450, especially if you listen to music generated by real instruments and place a lot of value on realistic timbre. It's got plenty of details but doesn't rely on exaggerated treble to generate them. Only real weakness to my ears is that the bass sometimes gets a bit loose.

I just want something other than the k3003. I guess the FW01 is a dissapointment in many peoples eyes. Keeping my eyes open for mentioned Audio Technica's iems to hit US market. I guess ill have to use the kse 1500 and isine 20 while i wait.

It depends on who you talk to. There are people here who thought that the FX1100 were as good (if not better) than other TOTL headphones that cost hundreds of dollars more.

(FX1100)
"They get closer to 1k IEMs than I'd have thought likely prior to buying them. With well recorded material the imaging is exceptional. The muscular bass and floating quality you sometimes notice put me in mind of the LCD-2."

I agree regarding the LCD-2s. I sold my 2.2s and replaced them with the FX1100s wanting to move to an iem. Not saying the FX1100s are as good overall as the 2.2s, but there is a sonic resemblance.

Despite owning TOTL IEMs like the UERM and k3 and recently having got excellent phones like the D2000J and Flare Audios, the vent-modded FX1100 are still the cream of the crop to my ears, particularly with classical music.

Old post but I tried out the likes of Dita Truth, Layla, Angie, Roxanne and a number of more 1K plus IEMs during a short trip to Osaka and whilst I was impressed with many, especially the Angie, my EQed FX850 was very comparable in terms of sound quality.

I tried likes of SE846, Layla, Angie, Roxanne, UM Mason, UM Maverick, UM Mavis, Truth but my EQed FX850 bettered many and was comparable to the best, with the Angie being my favourite. The FX850 kind of forced me to stop purchasing new IEMs since I cannot justify purchasing the 1K plus IEMs when the FX850 I bought for 180~ dollars are so so good. Only if the FX850 sounded like my EQed one out of the box, they would deserve a legendary status that the HD650 has enjoys IMO...

Tried a few mid rangers too but thought the CKR10 was pretty impressive too.

I've owned my pair of JVC HA-FX1200 close to a year now and are really impressed by them. Especially since then I have had the fortune of trying out many other pricier IEMs - Sony XBA series and even multi-driver CIEMs such as the Noble K10u, Fitear MH334&5, JH Roxanne etc.

The FX1200 certainly holds it's own against all the others. Most notably in the low end of things. The texture, detail, timbre and quality of the bass is just phenomenal and are just a class of it's own. Coupled with a very lush, dynamic and forward mid-range, sweet and crisp treble I find myself enjoying these single Dynamic Drivers immensely even when doing direct comparison with flagships that has multiple BA/hybrid drivers.

Sure some of the others might excel a bit more on other aspects of sound such as detail retrieval, sound separation or having a more neutral and analytical tuning (which is more preference than anything), but the overall quality of sound isn't that far apart and for pure music enjoyment, I find myself reaching for the JVC HA-FX1200 most of the time.

Jazz, Classical, Rock, Country, Pop, EDMs, ... you can throw almost anything at it and they wouldn't disappoint. The only thing I didn't quite find satisfying is live performance but that is more because I have the fortune( or misfortune?) of listening to the Chord Hugo TT + Audeze LCDX combo which has ruined it for me

Had the pleasure of listening to the Noble K10U and Katana today. While both are excellent IEMs in terms of detail, the FX1200 still trumps them by leaps and bounds when it comes to timbre, bass and bass detail, mids, texture and musicality.

I can understand your preference, FW01 is warm and bassy whereas my preference is bright and detailed like FI-BA-SS and Ck100pro.

Yeah, that's right, I'm a bass head , so my priorities are bass, mid and then soundstage. I like dark  iems (except for the Andromeda, which are bright). So my ideal iems should be U18 or Tia, because I like the U12 a lot , but I sold them because their bass is not punchy enough.

@BlinkST
I used to own the FX1200 (Fx1100) and I liked them a lot, and in my opinion, their sound is very unique, even more unique than the FW01. That means for someone, their sound not far from any TOTLs. Still their weak points are quite obvious, their bass is bloat and way too much in many songs and the mid lack definition somehow (hard to describe, maybe I use the wrong term, but in stock form, I think the mid can be better).  Actually this can be easily fixed with some silver cables, but you have to pay extra for the cable.

I've owned my IE800 now for over a month, and I must say it sounds great to me, the best IEM I've owned. With that said, the FW01 compares very favorably, and in one way (bass), is preferable with certain kinds of music. It lacks the upper frequency detail and transparency of the 800, hence my decision to get the silver Ortofon MMCX cable to try out with my FW01.

In my view, the FW01 is the successor to the FX1100/1200 if one views tonal accuracy as a measure. And the bass is still there to have fun with.

Good to know. I used to own the ie800. They just collected dust. Rather used my k3003, isine 20, kse1500, and se846 instead.

I had long sold off my ie800, not say it's bad but I don't really like the sound anymore.
Nowadays, I usually listen to my Fitear TG334, FAD Fi-ba-ss and Audio Technica CK100pro.

I am interested in the new Final BA-SST, but there's very little anecdotal info about it.

Have any of you ever heard the Dita "Answer" IEMs? I'm looking for a great single dynamic driver IEM and the FW01 is at the top of my list, but Amazon keeps raising the price and it's only available from 3rd party (I have a ton of Amazon gift cards so would love to buy it there). So I'm now looking at the Dita Answer and wondering if anyone has directly compared to the FW01? I guess it's probably a long shot, but worth asking :)
