Techne Update
Those following the KS and also this thread will have noted that we've been a little quiet regarding the Techne, mainly because there had been some issues surrounding the filters.
I'm pleased to be able to advise that Bob has identified a small issue with the rear port (partially blocked in the preproduction samples) which we've now been able to clear, and hear the Techne as Bob originally tuned it.
Bob already has some new filters on the way to myself and Mark so that we can revisit our reviews, and although this may not get to me before the completion of the KS campaign, I can let you know what the changes will be.
Bob tells me that the final filter colours for the Techne will be:
- Red = the old silver (nothing changes sonically). There is a little more bass now that the rear venting is clear.
- Gunmetal = the new middle filter. This is on it's way to me from the UK now, and I'll comment on it once it arrives. The major change with this one is the addition of a membrane, which basically allows Bob to slightly tone the highs, and slightly adjust the bass. This will become the middle or smooth filter.
- Purple = the current gold filter. This has remained the same, and this is the one I'm going to comment on, as the adjustment on the rear vent has given this filter a new sonic footprint, and it's one I absolutely love.
Set-up: Techne with gold filter, Fiio X5 (no EQ), Comply foam "sport" tips, my usual test tracks.
The gold filter formerly was a very vivid filter, great articulation of mid-range, and an elevated upper-mid range and treble - but vivid without being peaky. It was sadly a little light in the bass region though. With the port now being cleared, it has allowed the dynamic driver to vent properly, and given its bass impact back again.
So the gold filter now becomes the flat, but vivid / reference filter. Bass is present and brilliantly articulate - there when called for, but quite linear (definitely no mid-bass hump). I'd imagine a lot may find them still a little bass light - and that is where the coming replacement gun-metal filter will help. The golds however have already become my favourite filter with the Techne, and I'm really enjoying the adjustment. Female vocals now have a little weight in the lower registers (Norah is magic), and now bass guitar is coming through clear and clean.
Rock is a lot more enjoyable as well - especially acoustic. I'd probably like just a hint more bass with my rock tracks - but I can easily achieve this with EQ. The nice thing now thought is the overall presentation just has a lot more balance.
So thumbs up on the gold Bob - and I look forward to getting the new filter soon.
PS - these are a real bargain at their price point - but still don't beat the Delta with middle filter for me. That remains (for my tastes) the pinnacle of the Trinity line.
