Because there is allways the discussion about how long the bass heavy version was build. I had Snr. 1342 and Snr. 2017. The last one was not bass heavy for sure. So the change must be between this 2 numbers.

Has the S. No. 2017 been repaired by AKG once, maybe got it’s drivers replaced?

So far the transition had been located around S. No. 5000.
My S. No. 19xx is confirmed (by developer Heinz Renner) bass-heavy.

Bass-heavy or not is connected to driver’s fundamental resonance and therefore can easily be measured.
Look at this posting and some follow ups:
https://www.head-fi.org/threads/history-of-the-akg-k1000.57805/post-15331422

The target resonance frequency was 50Hz during the development phase of the K1000. "Bass light" products much later had a f0 of 85Hz.
My personal old product has still a f0 of 65Hz.

This shows there’s some unit to unit variation even in the bass-heavy range.

These are adapters for a DIN loudspeaker output equipped amplifier into female 4mm Banana plugs.
The last place where DIN LS connection occasionally can be found are car radios.

Not really related to AKG K-1000, except they origin from the same era.

Thank you, I might have used an old amplifier that had those 2 pin DIN sockets for speakers, and used the cable to connect to the K1000's !

Just wanted to say I'm now the lucky owner of a K1000 with BN serial, including box, original extension cable and original owners manual, all in mint condition :)

Hopefully never letting it go! Great headphone.
CORRECT!, NO LETTING GO OF THIS.

Great classic.

PM SENT…..

And you shouldn't. I sold my pair with a very low serial number (1xxx) made in 1989 in like new condition, and I feel now that it was a big mistake. The price was great, but that pair sounded better than four others I compared it with. I do now have a pair of the Mysphere and it is terrific headphones, but the K1000 is also unique. I miss that sound.

By any chance were the four others a high serial number? Over 5000? If so, it's easy to explain...

Yes, one pair was 5xxx, another - 8xxx (my second pair from the post - https://www.head-fi.org/threads/history-of-the-akg-k1000.57805/post-12126078), and two were very late pairs (10xxx and 11xxx), made in 2004-2005, I believe.
The 13xx pair simply sounded best (and was in the best condition somehow). It had no rattling (a known problem) after I reglued the diaphragm and replaced the foam disk. Other pairs did. And also that pair could sound louder than others without any distortion.

Technically the 5XXX should be the best one (it's what I got) with the 10xx and 11xx being the worst ones. That is of course with the drivers in good condition without rattling, otherwise they will all sound bad.

It is believed that the earlier the serial number the better the sound since there were some changes made in the production process over the years to make the headphones cheaper to produce. And that is also my experience. Also on Ebay early serial numbers are usually more expensive.
