HifiMAN HE-6 Planar Magnetic Headphone

So I haven't heard HE-6 with an amp stronger than Mjolnir 2, so take my thoughts with that grain of salt, but the k3003 is the closest I've heard to the detail retrieval, instrument separation, and neutral sound for which HE-6 (and, indeed, HD-800, though IEMs naturally lack the soundstage) is famed. The bass thump isn't quite as formidable, but they're the best universal IEM I've heard, and I intend to buy it at some point.

Thanks will see if I can find one to demo.

If you have the Mjolnir 2, anything but a poweramp is going to be a sidegrade at best.

And at worst a downgrade with other HPs.   The  problems  with the HE 6 are that, for an HP, it has unique amp requirements and secondly it has been discontinued.   The amp could become a stranded asset, i.e. good only for the HE6.

Picked up my 6s second hand a little while back. Is this foam mod something that comes standard with them or did the previous owner likely add this? ?tks
Does anyone feel that removal of the foam yields much of a difference? better? worse? Just wondering what precisely Hifiman felt this was necessary for. What the perceived benefit of it is.

True but I would use the Mjolnir 2 as a preamp for the poweramp running balanced and use the Mjolnir 2 for all other headphones.  Best of both worlds.

No, that is stock setup. Someone mentioned they believed it was there so one's ears didn't touch the drivers, others have stated it is there to help calm down the treble. In this thread it has been said the fuzzor is much more recommended if one removes that felt, as the treble is even more pronounced if it is removed.

WA5 gets a lot of love with both HE-6 and K1000. Is the WA5-LE any less capable with respect to the HE-6 than the full WA5? (If anyone can answer regarding k1000, even better)

I suppose I should be posting in here as well :)

HE-6: Vegans+Felt, Blutack, No grills
Gumby + Anthem i225.

Really love this headphone, came to this from HD800. HE-6 gives me near the same level of detail and aggression but so much more body and impact. Tried the HE-6 on my Lyr 2 for about an hour before yanking the anthem from it's speaker duty and here it has stayed. I'm sure a better amp would show me even more, but I'm pleased as punch with the HE-6 off the Anthem.

Is there a simple conversion/calculation to determine watts at  a particular ohm rating? Just wondering what 200 watts at 8ohms  would be driving into the HE6 at 50ohms? At what power rating would folks say that an amp  would be unwise to pair with the HE6?

You roughly halve the watts when you double the ohms

My understanding is the wattage drops in half for each doubling of ohms.  A 200 wpc amplifier at 8 ohm would be as follows:

200 wpc  8 ohm
100 wpc  16 ohm
50 wpc   32 ohm
25 wpc  64 ohm

Therefore the 50 ohm HE6 would be equivalent to roughly 35 /36 wps

cool. that seems simple enough. So I've only recently picked up my HE6s. Driving them with my Cavalli LAu. Does a very nice job in my opinion. However, I have a couple older , vintage power amps that I've had sitting around , essentially just collecting dust for the past several years. Thinking bout possibly trying one or the other with the 6s. I'm wondering if anyone's familiar with either of them(or both) and would recommend one or the other for driving the 6s? Hafler XL280 140 watts at 8ohms and Adcom GFA-555 200watts at 8 ohms. Thanks for any advice you can provide. Cheers!
