Very interesting observations guys, esp. from Jason. I can't wait to try it on the HE6s.

Question: with the best amps and proper mods done on the HE6, does it get near the clarity of the HE1000 at all? I am returning the HE1000 but I do miss the clarity of the HE1000.

IMO, the HE-6 offers more clarity than the HE1K. not as much air and openness maybe but surely more clarity.  Very different animals though. Fire vs Water.

For you guys that are visual learners, this is where the felt goes on the vegan pads (right where I slipped my index finger):

View of the felt lined:

How it looks if the hair screen was missing. See the exposed pleather? Also see how I use tape instead of the hifiman rings? Stop using the damn rings!:

The template I use:

What kind of felt did you use?

I still have some of the stiff adhesive backed creatology from when I did the fuzzor mod on the HE500.  Do you think that the stiff would be suitable still or soft would be better?

Give it a try. It could be better.

The He-6s will have better clarity imo.

I spent a few hours comparing a HE6 and HE1000 and to my ears the HE1000 won on the clarity department, mostly because layering and separation was cleaner - although the HE6 had more treble quantity and attack. They really are quite different sound signatures however and I felt the clarity was mostly a subjective call.

I did a shootout between the HE-1000 (single ended) and HE-6 (balanced) through the Ragnarok, and I thought clarity was pretty even between the two. Switching to balanced might give the HE1K a very slight edge, but at that level it doesn't even matter. (And this is coming from a totally clarity-nut!!!) FWIW, the HE-6 was totally stock.

While I subscribe to the probability I am more of an HE-6 person (based on impressions I have read), running single-ended on the Rag is significantly compromising the potentiality of the HE-K.

Thus, my inclusion of that potentially significant caveat. However, if the choice is between a balanced HE-6 and running the HE-1000 from a SE amp, know that the clarity difference is negligible (IMO, YMMV, etc.)
Nice to see you over here Liu! Apparently, all my gushing about the HE-6 finally got to you, eh? I finally got a pair of my own last week!

Good... Probably won't beat the HD800 though! :p

Debatable... The Hd800 wins for resolution and imaging. No doubt. Buy for clarity, I'm not so affirmative.

Hmmm. My care factor for resolution and imaging is limited. I want engagement with my music. My modded HD800, which I adore in a way that is almost indecent, takes second place to my modded HE6 for the simple reason that the HE6 delivers a better musical experience than the modded HD800 can.

My personal viewpoint (happy to take some flak on this) is that the HD800 takes the dynamic driver about as far as it can go. Planar drivers are a superior technology that can do more.

Take a HE6, do the blutak mod, remove the enclosures, do the latest felt mod under the earpads (not the fuzzor). It is absolutely, and unequivocally, superior to the modded HD800 to my ears. YMMV, but the day of the dynamic driver ended with the HD800 IMHO.

I sincerely hope that Sennheisser's next TOTL headphone is a planar or electrostatic. Dynamic drivers have had their day - it's done. HD800 is the end of the line. Time to move on.

"Better musical experience" is a personal thing. Depends mostly on our music and audio tastes. To each their own.

Absolutely true. I should have put an explicit "YMMV" rather than an implied one

For sure - my own personal experience - the modded HD800 is a great headphone, but he modded HE6 is better (YMMV).
