I store my songs on a quite old external HD here and I notice no difference to my new internal SSD. Not a single noise. And everything is connected to a cheap APC surge protector.

You guys should focus more on the transducers rather than cables, regenerators and that kind of audio voodoo.

Don't tell me what to do!

No it's actually much appreciated since I'm shopping for an external drive as we speak and I can't make up my mind.

I'm torn between external hard drive desktop (with ac adapter), portable external drive, external ssd and usb stick. Too much choices

Just get the one with more capacity, and USB 3.0 preferable. Or the most practical/useful for you.

You can also consider an inexpensive NAS, as:

I use 6 drives similar to the above with several WIN PCs, all through IP without any installation or software.

I made up my mind, I'm going with this one http://www.qplaza.nl/artikel/6516/LaCie_2TB_Porsche_Design_P_bslash__and__039;9223_USB_3.0_Slim_harde_schijf.html

The Lacie Porsche Design 2TB portable.
