I just finished swapping the 500 drivers into the 350 cups/headband. Check it out here http://www.head-fi.org/t/790902/the-ultimate-step-by-step-hifiman-headband-replacement-guide-from-oldstock-hifiman-he-4-5le-6-400-500-into-the-newstock-he-400i-560/105#post_13121715.

how much does it weigh ? And dies is still feel bulky on the head ?

It's slightly lighter (I'll get an actual number tomorrow). It feels better on the head but, it still has some heft to it. Those drivers are heavy.

I did have the lohb headband strap installed on the old frame, though.

I'm not sure it would represent an upgrade to the Hd600, for me the are on the same league.

The tone is even more true to the reality with the hd600, you only will get better bass response, for the rest i find the hd600 to be slightly superior.

what amp do you recommend for $200-250 used

somebody recommended that the magni 2 isnt good for the 500

I personally do not like the Schiit sound. It is a cold and sterile tone IMO. I'm not sure what to recommend for you, though. I'm using the Matrix HPA3-B for mine, but that's not in your budget. This thread says this little amp does wonders for around $200 http://www.head-fi.org/t/823002/elemental-watson-class-a-valve-mosfet-hybrid-headphone-amplifier-review-added

I have Audeze deckard, which is similar to the matrix from what I understand. I find they sound really great in high gain mode, very good in medium but even better in high... Do you use your matrix in high gain with the he500s?

If you volume match both high and low gain there will be no sonic difference. The only reason to go into high gain is you aren't getting sufficient volume with headroom. High gain also introduces more distortion.

On low gain I am at about 35% of available volume at normal listening levels. If I switch to high gain I am around 20% of available volume.

I leave mine at low gain so when I switch to my Fostex TH-X00 I don't blow my eardrums out. They are a very sensitive headphone.

I don't know but I hear it to sound best in high gain... Maybe placebo who knows.

It's because it's louder and sounds more dynamic and has more impact. I went through the same thing on my start into headphones.

Edit: I am not implying you are a noob. Lol

But I can get it very loud in medium gain by turning the knob up. I just think when I flip from medium gain with volume pot higher to high gain with volume pot lower, it sounds better in the high gain setting. Like more full and yes forceful, but not just because it's louder... Idk not a huge difference but seems to be there. Maybe I am a noob lol, it doesn't bother me, I just try to maximize listening pleasure, even if it's just placebo effect in my brain.

The thing is I do get some hissing in high gain mode with them, so it's probably not the optimal setting, but as long as music is playing I think it's sounds slightly better.
