Hifiman he-400i Impressions and Discussion

So far I have really been enjoying my loaner pair, the comfort is great and I am a big fan of the pads.
Have noticed the weight being a lot less coming from my Alpha Dogs as well.
Think I may end up forking out the dough for these bad boys.

edit: also I really like the cable, not sure if I am sold on the 90 degree jack yet though.

My demo unit got hit with customs

Unfortunately, that's to be expected... Customs don't care about whether it's new, repaired or what... It would have to be marked as 'gift' and even then they want money from you unless you are willing to spend time arguing (almost) to death.

Hifiman made a mistake. They should have sent all the loaners to a Euro distributer who would then send them to testers across Europe.

Well, mine did too... Hopefully it won't be more than 50$...
I'll find out tomorrow.

About to put in my pre order for a pair of these, will be my first planar can. I have in possession, the DT990 (600), HD600, K702 and Philips X1.

So the cable is pretty short hey? Will be needing to replace it immediately then, as I listen to my music while laying in bed next to my setup most of the time.

The cable is close to 5 feet long. About 1.4 meters.

or get an extender instead of replacing it?  i've used a Grado 15 ft extension cable and I can't discern any quality loss when using it.

Most people in this thread say he500 is slightly better.  wearing the he-400i is like putting on a hat made of warm buttered marshmallows though.  so comfy I can't imagine trading it for something that sounds 5% better but is like wearing an a bear trap on your head

I may have exaggerated the comfort difference a little

Don't forget an amp and a DAC still plays a part.
They sound decent off practically anything but they surely must scale as well...
I should receive mine today :)

Guys is the 400i better or at least equal to the 500? I can get the 400i for the same price as the 500.

In terms of sound quality. I don't care about comfort.

I am interested in the comparison between the 400i and 500 also as they are similar in price range. I would greatly appreciate if someone with an experience with both can chime in. Thanks.

I may have missed those post. Please let me know where they are. I have not owned the he500 for quite some time and have the 400i now.
