Hifiman he-400i Impressions and Discussion

I wonder if the Foxtex TH500RP is our answer to the LCD2/HE400 replacement question... apparently full bass and mids. That's all i can ask for from something that isn't an LCD2.

early impressions on the new fostex th500rp don't seem to suggest a strong bass emphasis/impact or great bass extension unfortunately. impressions start from here on the thread: http://www.head-fi.org/t/684441/new-fostex-rp-open-backed-planar-magnetic-headphone-th500rp-available-now/210#post_10900890

I think that the new closed PM-3 might be more promising, though I personally hope they are tuned to be more neutral.

Just curious if you desire a strong bass response, why haven't you tried the TH900s?

I don't desire a strong bass response. I desire a warm, full bass response ala HE400. Not much more, definitely not less.

And i owned the precursor to the TH900, the D7000 which was my fave headphone of all time in sound, but I just wasn't a fan of the pads and the overall fit. Also, I have no need for closed-back headphones.

And lol, TH900. I'm not even close to affording that kind of price range. Nowadays, even the HE-400 is a huge financial risk.

I heard the TH600 and 900 in Nashville about a month ago. Meh...it was okay but I guess that I'm forever spoiled by planar mags. That being said, I soon plan to retire with the hd800 and a good amp.

Yeah, planarmagnetics spoiled me too. I would honestly choose a good planar over even my beloved D7000. Again, just give me a pre-fazor LCD2 with better ergonomics, comfort and weight, and I'd be totally done.

I recently sold my pre fazor lcd2.2 and cried when I did it. What an incredibly moving signature every time I cued up music. But ultimately way too heavy and a poor balance of weight additionally. Take that driver and put it in a he400i and I'd mortgage my house for it.

Will grill modding the 400i's give it a sound stage that can approach the 560?

Having heard both my HE-400i's without any grill at all, and having heard the 560 before, I have to say that the 400i's even when grill modded just simply cannot match the soundstage of the 560. Sure, you'll make the 400i airier and the soundstage will get bigger by a bit, but there's still a noticeable difference between the two headphones.

I agree. The soundstage is better on the 400i with the grill mod but it does not match the 560. It does get closer however. I'd put a rough estimation of 85% when grill modded.

Cool - so does removing/replacing the 400i take it from something like 60% to 85% of the 560? or is it only a slight upgrade...from 70%?

difference from grill mod is pretty small overall from my personal experience on the he-560. like maybe 5-15% improvement depending on who you ask.
