Hifiman EF-5 headphone amplifier mods and rolls

I still use the EF5 as my main amp, I think its very underrated on head fi. The first thing I did when I got the amp was to remove all the plexi parts. They just get in the way of tube and op amp rolling, especially the tube. The trick I use to is to actually "roll" the tube in and out of the socket. I move it in a circle (I do it counter clockwise as I push the tube in or pull it out) it will help seat all the pins.

I notice a slight channel imbalance on very low volumes with the small alps pot. I have other amps with the same volume pot that have the same issues so I think it's just they way the smaller Alps pots are. I was also planning on upgrading to the full size Alps but never got around to it.

I just finished installing a new socket. This makes me sooooo happy.

I'm also in the process of installing the alps blue pot. I'll let you know hoe everythiNG goes when I'm finished!

Make sure your soldier joints are clean and your not bridging any other component. Take a picture and post it up here.

Honestly, this project is my first DIY and a nightmare. The copper pads that connect the pins to the pcb came off when I desoldered the original socket and It made everything quite difficult. I ended up just desoldering the new socket and bought a conductive pen to HOPEFULLY fix the traces. It's consumin more of my time than it should and im not really getting anywhere.

Hello Has anyone tried using an e80cc tube ( double current consumption ) with a hifiman ef-5? Thanks

I'll try 2 tubes with golden feet (Phillips
warm sound ) and silver feet (Hungarian production Siemens label more aggressive sound )

Hello! Back in 2014 I asked Hifiman about changing AU7 tube with other variants from 12AU. They said it's ok but distortion may increase:

I've been enjoying this great amp for 9 nine years now and it's been a wonderful peace on equipment. I change volpot for an ALPS potentiometer and also changed the opamp for a Burson V5i dual.
