thank you, guys !

to danny: don't worry, your site introduced me to all this stuff just
a few weeks ago. and see, now i'm hooked - it worked out for
you ...

to macdef: i intentionally left out all the amps which were
supposed to be portable. the headroom stuff is somewhere
inbetween and the prices are on the very edge of my $500 price
range. thinking about that - and as nobody ever mentions it -
i'll forget about the naim headline, too.

to steinie: o.k., sounds sweet, i'll keep that one in mind.

to nick d.: you're right

... i guess that's why i didn't get the
tubes thing right at first - it look's so solid state.

to flumpus: right here in germany - it says 1300 DM on this page
http://www.puresound.de/verstaer/sugden/preise.html
that's $587 as of today.

to joelongwood: sorry, i didn't know about that site, couldn't find
it yesterday. and it's even cheaper than in the US ($536) - cool !

soooo, right now my favourites would be:
- sugden headmaster
o.k., it's mainly the looks - but it's a regular pre-amp, too.
- all the tube stuff

do you think that the price difference between mg head and
earmax is justified in any way ? i mean: $300 - that's a lot of
difference ...

btw, is there a good "introduction to tubes"-site somewhere
on the net ? i just don't know anything about it...

thanks again !

MG Head OTL vs. Earmax Pro.... now THAT would be a face-off I'd love to attend.

With Sennheiser 580's, the MG Head DT fares surprisingly well against the Melos SHA-1... provided that it is loaded with quality tubes.

Well since no one mentioned them you can also look for a used McCormack Headphone Drive (MHD) or Integrated Drive (MID). The MID can also drive a set of speakers in addition to two sets of phones. You can see either on ebay or more commonly audiogon for between $400 and $500. Oh, and they are SS and can be modded by Steve McCormack at SMC Audio.
