I would get the HE-500 over the 400.  You can always change amps later if you really want to.  From reading I've done on here the O2 has enough power to drive the 500's.

Heya,

If you can afford it, the HE-500 is the way to go.

HE-400 if budget is a constraint, and/or if you have a preference for it over the HE-500 after hearing both.

The O2 is sufficient.

Very best,

Agree with shazb0t, how about tub amps such as little dot 1+, they are in similar price range.

The I+ is the only one before going high-end for the Little Dot series for the orthos. And it's not a tube, it's a hybrid, it's not tubey sounding actually.

For HE -500 O2+ODac or Schiit Magni+ Modi or Littledot MK*? max 300$ for Amp/Dac.

Scratch the Little Dot series unless you get the I+ and even then, I wouldn't, it doesn't quite hit 1 watt at 38 ohms, for an HE-500, it's below 800mW at that level. Not ideal at all. And the other Little Dot series before getting into the higher-end ($650+) are OTL's that are not good at all with low impedance orthos (outputting a lowly 100mW into the impedance of the HE500).

Very best,
