HD 650 - which amp is best for 1000 USD (no DIY)
Apr 1, 2010 at 12:15 AM Post #16 of 39
Hm, so far it seems that HD650s are bit picky about soundsource and have some synergy with certain amps, while HD 800 sounds pretty good on everything thats able to drive them and progress higher as you pay more coins.

(which seems logical)

Few users mentioned that tube amps sounds best with HD 650s.. is that true?

I'd go for a Beta22.

Just got the 337 for my 650s and I am in absolute love. The 337, while being tube, is a bit more "solid state" sounding. That is to say it sounds a bit more like solid state than most tube amps while being able to maintain that iconic tube smoothness. Having gone from 2 [admittedly lesser] solid state amps, the 337 is a much better match. With your 1k budget you could step up to the 337SE or the up and coming La Figaro 339.

It is relative expensive, but it should not matter as you wrote.
Hence you have no budget and are just looking for "the best of the best".

What source are you going to be using, by the way? A good amp is useless if all you're going to be using as a source is a cheap sound card, for example. Your $1k would be better distributed between a DAC and amp in that case. Also, if you don't like how the bass is now with your HD-650s, then you have bought the wrong headphones.

The Burson HA-160 was reportedly made especially for the HD650s.

Grokit: A great many amps are tested with the HD-650s. I'd be surprised actually if there was a desktop amp that wasn't tested with them in fact. I've even seen amps that weren't ideal for them tested with them.

Quite high-quality CD/DVD player.. Ive tested few amps with that, they were good, just sound isnt exactly in "synergy" with HD 650.. maybe cause all were solid-state (no tubes).

Btw. I like HD 650, just want to get bit more from them.

Tough, Ill probably have possibility to test HD 800 + some high quality amp, so Ill see..

Agreed, but I didn't say "tested with"; I said, "made especially for", and there is a difference:

"During the design process, the team aimed for proper drive into what were then considered the toughest headphones, Sennheiser's open-backed 300-ohm HD650s. The rationale was simple. If it could handle those, it'd handle anything with equal grace."

My Woo 3+ modded is crazy good with the 650's, you even have enough left over to get Some Killer Tubes Like a GEC A1834 and some Rhodium plated Tesla E88CC's. Have way more than that to roll with.

Indeed... though... I would suggest you want a good 5998 or 7236 as the power tube (Tung Sol, or Cetron).

The 7236's are OK, The Bendix 6080WB sounds so much better.
