The Apex AD600A DVD player uses an IDE interface between the transport and the rest of the player. People have reported being able to use Toshiba DVD-ROM drives (a few years back) to replace the stock drive in case of failure.
There's absolutely no reason the same thing couldn't be attempted with a CD-ROM drive. In fact, the overwhelming likelihood is that it already has.
EDIT: Actually, check a link above in this thread for an example of someone doing it with one of the NEC's.
this thing seems to have alot of potential..I just ordered me a cdr-602 for the hell of it. I'm not expecting much...so maybe I can give myself a big surprise out of this
. Anyone got a DAC recommendation in the $500 range?
hmm...dont see fullcompass carrying it on their online catalog...think i'm blind. Ah well, found it at samedaymusic.com for $130 shipped new, pretty good I think. Now which mod package...hmmMMmm..
Out of curiosity, why aren't more people using the ART DI/O if it provides quite substantial sonic bennefits over onboard DACs? Is it because nobody knows about them? Or is it just because there are better solutions other there?

You can also just call fullcompass.
ART DI/O is like a gem. It's supposed to be used for pro audio recording use. It's hard to believe something that cheap can provide that level of quality. That's why there's a cult following

The DI/O is truely an excellent piece. I'm enjoying my modded DI/O with custom power supply at the moment and much prefer it over my very dry sounding 555ES.
If anyone is interested, there is a NOS (yes, new in box) NEC 3xp on eBay with a BIN of only $10. Shipping is $12.50 on top of that. So far, no bidders, so BIN is still good to go.
