Fostex x Massdrop TH-X00 Review

Any expected sonic changes using the HM5 pads?

No...which is what I was looking for.   They are more comfortable than the stock pads (a lot of room for even the biggest ears).

I didn't need or really want one (I have a TH-900) but to help out the community I just joined the drop.

Drew

Same here....I'm not expecting the THX to beat the TH900 at all...rather just give me a different sound signature but within a house sound I already love. Also nice to have cheaper but still stunning pair to move around with and not worry about as much. I need closed back ( yes it is...not the best but still does the job in an office) so I didn't even consider any hifiman, Philips, etc. When I get open back it will be house bound, so it might as well be big and bold such as LCD3 or new HD800s....

Pads look like exactly what I want except they don't look like real leather and I feel like they might annoy my ears or make them hot similar to the M50x stock pads.

Try the velour pads then.  I don't know if they will affect the sound signature though.   The pads on my D2000 do not make my ears hot, but YMMV.

Can't do velour on a closed back, feel like it will negatively effect the sound.

That's usually the case.   These Fostex\Denon models are not really closed headphones though, so perhaps velours will work.   The good thing is that these pads are cheap, so you can try both and still pay less than you would for Lawton or Alpha Pads.

I will try these when I get a chance:

Might want to try out some cheaper headphones with varying sounds before you get into the HD800 or even the THX00.  Or at least, buy the THX00 and get the HD800 later if you want a completely different sound.

Now that I sold my Th-900 and ordered these and have some extra cash to spend, I need to finally find an amp/dac that does not cause the headphone to hiss. Any recommendations on an amp/dac that has good synergy with these series of Fostex headphone (I understand that no one really has these yet but they're in the same family as the th900/600) and a low noise floor to prevent hiss from these sensitive cans? This hiss drove me nuts at times with my 900's.

You could try the m9xx. I've used it briefly with modded T50RPs and they sounded great.

It synergizes well with everything I've used on it so far (LCD 2.2, Grado GH1, Laylas, I could go on..) and the background was black enough for IEMs.

The only weakness I've come across is interference from my cellphone's proximity and a lack of line inputs. It's DAC or nothing, but it's a great DAC, so...

I was wondering if some modding can be done to make THX00/600/900 to have better isolation. I would love to use beautiful woodies for office usage, but afraid the sound leaks might affect my colleagues.
