Fostex x Massdrop TH-X00 Review

I'd be more inclined to buy these if they were higher impedance. I have no intention of ever taking phones like these on the go, and I can barely crack the volume knob on my desktop amps when using low impedance phones.

Exactly why I love them... Sound great out of anything. No need for very big, clunky, expensive extra gear.

Also why I'm very happy about the trend towards decibel stepped volume controls on amps. It's 2016, the only reason an amp can't have its volume control be reasonable for everything from IEMs to an HE-6 is laziness.

My desktop amps are neither big, nor clunky, but they sound fabulous. I have yet to hear a portable amp that I like the sound of better than my CEntrance DACmini driving HiFiMan HE-560.

The actual issue for me isn't impedance, it's sensitivity. The HiFiMan planar magnetic phones are somewhat unusual in that they're 45 ohms impedance, but have very low sensitivity of only 90db, so they're quite power hungry. I now see that the Fostex TH-X00 are rated at 94db sensitivity, which would be OK in a desktop setup compared to many of the low impedance phones with sensitivity over 100db.

Agreed. Though, a six foot cord would have made them more portable - even if for just around the house.

I had mine shortened. Definitely a plus being able to sit on the couch with these while playing out of my A17.

Sending mine out within the next week to have the cable shortened (and termination made into 3.5mm) and the remainder turned into an extension cable.

Mine were done exactly the same way. I'll post a pic later :)

Did anyone have their units back from Peterek yet?

Wow 600 already purchased. I think it took almost a week for the first drop to sell out. I bet these will be gone by tomorrow evening

The major hurdle this time around is the waiting time. Even custom IEMs take a shorter time lol.
