For 6AS7G tube rollers here .....

I’ve read this entire thread. And the 421a/5998 comparison thread. And multiple other sources including tube specification sheets. I qualified my answer with “short story long” because there isn’t a short answer. There is conflicting information, various opinions, a multitude of pictures and no one has a universal understanding or answer to the history of these tubes. That being said, a search is a step toward forming a better understanding. Yes, there are dimpled/domino versions of the 6520 that many say are a 5998. That doesn’t mean they are a 5998. That doesn’t mean they’re not. Spec sheets would argue they are not but humans made these things and things can be mislabeled. This thread is miles long. I don’t expect everyone to read it. But it has a LOT of useful information.
It is most likely the dimple version are 5998 since up-specking was common practice , that is where all the parameters exceed the requirement for a given tube spec a substitute is made
Very common with rectifiers

In my anecdotal experience, the 6520’s that look like 5998’s sound like 5998’s. And the 6520’s that look like 6AS7G sound like 6AS7G. If the electrical characteristics are actually different than 5998/6AS7G it’s not obvious to me with my amp and ears. Definitely a curiosity.

How can you determine when a tube was made?

That one is simple because the year (74) is printed right on the tube! Other tube manufacturers are not so easy....

Tube roller question:

Does anyone know (you EE guys or those with measurement capabilities) how many watts a pair of 5998 tubes puts out?

Some of us on the Woo Audio WA22 thread believe that when we use 5998 (or 6as7g) tubes in place of 6080 power tubes, we're getting more (perceived) volume, hence the curiosity of more watts. The amp is rated at 1.5 watts with 6080 tubes and we're speculating about 2 watts with 5998 tubes. Just curious if anyone has further information?
