FiiO EM3 - Impression and Discussion
Mar 27, 2016 at 10:55 PM Post #181 of 362
Yeah, I was surprised actually. I was using it for a lot of skype calls and I got a lot of comments that it sounds a lot better than my usual UE6000 or apple EarPods.

Wait, are you being sarcastic? :p

I'm curious to see how it stacks up to the JVC FRD60/80. Big price differential, but, those are my benchmark(s). Nothing has come close yet.

In terms of mic quality or sound quality? :)

General all-round mic performance. I sound perfectly clear to my callers and the mic cuts out pretty much all outside noise. I was able to walk around in a windstorm without my caller realizing I was outside. Surprised the heck out of me when I pre-apologized (Canadian at work...) for all the noise and they replied with "What noise?".

No, EM3 sells for $10/US, EX1 sells for $65-70/US. EX1 is a Dunu Titan 1 knockoff (done in conjunction); EM3 is an economically priced bud with inline mic. Meant as a cheap replacement for stock Smartphone buds.

Completely different class.

Better call it "OEM", because that's what it is and it is totally normal and legit. "Knockoff" implies that FiiO (illegally) copied Titan 1's design and manufactured their own IEM with the same design, which is (fortunately) obviously not the case and would be product piracy, depending on to what extent they copied the design. Instead, they reached out to DUNU and asked to make an IEM based on their (FiiO's) specs (cable, design, branding), which is a 100% legit thing and happening in the manufacturing industry everyday (many of products by brands like W, X and Y are actually made by brand Z as OEM commission for W, X and Y). FiiO didn't even "hide" the fact that the EX1 is manufactured by DUNU as OEM commission, as the IEMs also feature DUNU's branding on them, which I find a nice and transparent move from FiiO.

Kind of a noob question: if I want to use the EM3 with my Schiit Fulla, do I need some kind of TRRS to TRS adapter?

Nope - the Fulla has a single ended output, the EM3 is single-ended as well (the fourth pin is for the microphone). With about 99% of all amps and sources, the ground and mic pins will be bridged and work well.
In rare occasions, the sound might be hollow unless one is constantly pressing the mic button, but even for this, a short extension cable will solve this grounding issue in about every case.

I haven't tried the EM3 yet, but I would like to see how well the EM3 would perform comparing with Shozy IEM.

Then we do love to know your impression of them in the future , good luck to you!

They sure do look sleek as hell in black, I'm most interested in reading a comparison of these with the VE Monks and the Edifier H180!
Kudos to Fiio for arranging the giveaway

It would be awesome to see some open-hybrids from fiio...  I really liked the sound of fiio's EX1, so i'm looking forward to hearing these. Hopefully the sound leak isnt too ridiculous, being earphones, but they are open back, so will be interesting.
