Not that I have listened to 100s of TOTL flagship IEMs, but of the handfuls I have, the ONYX equals them on all fronts and has surpassed many at 1/4 of the cost. Ear fit and integration into the power of the device is also spectacular! Welcome to the new paradigm.
Now leaving the 200 hour burn-in mark, I am discovering new abilities. I did try-out a full range of obscure foam-tips, though back with what I have always been using with renewed enthusiasm. Also the Walkman 1A is somehow not preferred as the 1Z has taken over with the TA as the source of choice. These are somehow getting better and better?
I have had polarized ideas about the XBA-N3. I purchased it right at Sony Tokyo headquarters when it came out. At that time IEMs that came with 4.4mm were rare. I didnāt use it much at the start, but found a new tone with it by using aftermarket tips, 4.4mm and aftermarket (MrWalkman) firmware. Basically the included hybrid tips emphasized the lows too much for me. They were foggy and sloppy with a lackluster midrange, I thought?
Changing tips on the N3:
Reposition of the N3 mids slightly forward made it special. So then years later I actually liked the N3.......still under very certain restraints!
Simply said the ONYX is a full development beyond anything that was possible with the N3. Simply take every metric you can think of and expand them. Bigger soundstage, deeper more controllable bass, better midrange and a beautiful (just right) treble experience!
Itās the Sony XBA-N3 sound, only 3D.
The strangest thing is the Sony Hybrid Tips that made the XBA-N3 have a foggy low end, can be used with the ONYX and actually donāt change the low end? Wild!
