It is useful to make a list of the actual variants of these headphones and their differences.
From what I could gather, we have:

  1. K701 early: plain pads, 7 bump headband;
  2. K702: same as above, but biwired with detachable cable, 3D pads and 8 bump headband;
  3. Q701: same as above, with better matched drivers (?);
  4. K701 late: same as above (???) but with captive cable;
  5. K702 65th Anniversary: same as K702 but with memory foam pads, flat headband and even better matched drivers;
  6. K712: same as above (unconfirmed).

I'd like to confirm if:
- Did the early 701 really have different pads?
- If so, did they change them to 702 spec when the latter went into production or was it later?
- Did they change the headband with the pads or are these separate "events"?
- Does the Q701 sound the same as K702? AKG claims no difference;
- Do the late production K701 sound the same as Q701 and K702?

To my knowledge, the neweset version of the K701 sounds the same as the K702 and Q701. The older K701 was a lot dryer sounding. Some people claim the Q701 has slightly more bass and slightly less treble than the K701, but i dont have them with me to compare right now

I have been thinking about trying the Q701....would this be a good compliment to my RS1i

To my knowledge the rs1i is treble heavy and is good for fast paced music. If you listen to a lot of rock I would keep the rs1 but as an overall, I'd go for the Q701s. They have very different sound signatures so I would try them out first.

Someone know if the 7XX family are now made in China?
because i bought pair of akg q701 that are not written on them made in Austria.
That's wierd. (but still they sound good, i think)

I'm guessing AKG recently switch to making the Q701s in China.
(someone recently bought a Q701 that was Made in China)
But I'm guess AKG is holding off announcing it's making 7XXs in China.

I believe they make the new model 712 Pro in Austria.

So you are saying that if i have bought AKG K 701 with 3D pads, ripped silver rings, 8 bumps and serial number 76840 on the left that they should sound similar to Q701?
And its wierd that everybody said to me that they have nearly no bass but i found K 701 bass to be slightly stronger than Beyerdynamic DT 880 250 ohm.... thats strange :D

Well it really depends on the amp you're using.

AKG 712 pro is made in Austria, 100%, and they wrote it on the headphone...I think, looking at 7XX cost, that it is made in PRC....otherwise they would have been very proud to state on that  headphone "made in Austria" as well....but does it realy matter...if the sound is good...who's care about.
I own the 712, and will be happy when i will get the 7XX
