This is the most enthusiastic forum on the net by far!

I'd like to hear about the differences between the Denon D1001 and the AD700 from folks who have heard both. Which would you prefer and why.

Thanks a million

Right off the bat you are looking at a semi-closed versus an open headphone. The differences will be substantial mostly in soundstage, isolation, and sound leakage.

Do you have any criteria you'd like to add? Are you shopping for these phones or are we just comparing for comparison's sake?

Because it lets the OP know that the AD700's are very very good and it would take something much much better and more expensive to beat them.

I am an Audio Technica fanboy. Do not try to reason with me.

That's OK. Preference knows no reason.

I think its a genetic thing.

One is an open back, the other is a closed back.

The D1001 has a lot more bass, more slam, more punch, but it can be bloated at times, although overall its bass is fantastic.

The AD700 has a far better soundstage.

The AD700's mids are more forward than the D1001

The AD700 has a lot more speed

The D1001 is a bit dark and lacks that treble sparkle. The AD700 has more treble, but doesn't get fatiguing like a grado.

Both has great clarity, but while the D1001's clarity is good the AD700's clarity is good enough to complete with the better mid range phones. Only the likes of the K601 or DT880 is better.

The AD700 is comfortable, but the D1001, and the other Denons, is one of the most comfortable headphones you can get.

Thanks scytheavater.

I have an average size head but my 14 year old teenage daughter will at times also be using whichever cans I decide in (and I may have to buy both because I can see one set of cans might not do it!).

Will she have a problem with the AD700? Her head is not yet adult size.

Which of the 2 cans would you guys say is the most "magical" in terms of music. Which one is the most engaging?

Very good chance the AD700 would fit loose and cause a problem.

It depends, but from the previous question I'm guessing you and she would find the AD700 the most engaging.
