I'm thinking of snapping up a pair of vintage HD424s and replacing the cable on them. However, I would like to know whether you can just use something like a HD25 cable or HD650 cable or if you have to buy a replacement cable specifically designed for the HD424. Thanks.

As far as I know they're not interchangeable.
HD6xx , HD25 and HD424 have slightly different connectors, with marginally different sizes and profiles.
They are very similar in appearance but I understand they don't quite fit if you get the wrong model.

Senneheiser sells a specific cable compatible with the HD424 , part no. #37974.
It is however substantially more expensive than the 650 cable.
I don't know if the added cost is really worth the bother for a headphone like hd424

Thank you for the information. I will keep that in mind.

That 424 cable resembles the HD25-1 and HD25-SP cables.
I know first-hand that HD25 and HD6x0/580 cables are interchangeable, though the shorter length of the stock HD25 radio connectors will be a bit inconvenient with HD6x0/580, but those bigger Senns' cables should work with 424 perfectly.
