Hello, i'm fairly--very, actually--new here, and i've come with a couple of questions.

I'm in the market for some headphones; they're pretty much only going to be used for gaming, but i might do a little bit of music-listening on the side. I'm very much a n00b when it comes to audio equipment, so i'd very much like some help in this matter.

I have a budget of around £100 to buy these headphones with, but i haven't made up my mind which to get. The main contenders are the Sennheiser HD595s and Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pros (80 ohm), although i'm pretty much set on getting the latter. Bearing in mind i don't have an amplifier (and, with very little knowledge in this area, i'm in no position to get one), i've decided to opt for the 80 ohm variety of the DT 770, if this is the pair i eventually get. But, i was wondering, even these 80 ohm cans, will they be OK without an amp?

I'm going to be buying one of the Creative Sound Blaster Fatil1ty cards to accompany this, but i haven't quite decided whether to get the one which includes the front i/o drive.

Anyway, if you could give your opinions on my headphone choice, or maybe suggest some alternatives if you think these won't be very good without an amplifier, i'd be very greatful.

Check out Audio Technica AD900 or A900 (AD is open, A is closed). Although I doubt you'll be able to tell the difference between the A/D900 and the A/D700's (especially if you're a noob like me), so you could probably go for the cheaper models.

They are known for being very comfortable and a big soundstage for gaming.

I think the majority of people tend to prefer the sound of the 770 pre '05 pro 80's. They sound great unamped but amping them allows them to reach their potential, making them even better. I havent heard the ad900's but I've heard from people who have both that the 770's are more fun to listen to.

Love my good old 770/80s. They have served me well in everything. They are sturdy and unbelievably comfortable.

yep.. its hard for me to take em off sometimes (well, i've since gone to the 990's but same comfort level).

The 595s are also unbelievably comfortable and offer great directional cues for gaming. No amp needed, and they sound great for music of all kinds. I'd recommend the 595s if you're neither (a) a basshead nor (b) looking for something with a degree of isolation.

That said, I always hear good things about the ATs, but I've never tried them. They're pretty universally recommended for gaming, it seems. (I'm not a big gamer, honestly.)

ive had 595,770 and AD700.

imo the AD700 is the most comfortable, followed by 595 and 770. dont get me wrong, all of them are comfortable but the AD700 is the most.

soundwise, i like the sound of Dt770 if im in a basshead mode. otherwise the ad700 is a nice cans and the senn hd595 too. and 595 has better bass than the ad700 .

Thank you for your replies. I suppose i could consider the A700s, since the A(D)900s are too expensive if i buy them in England.

So i guess it's either out of the DT 770 Pros (80 Ohm), HD595s and A700s. I would've thought the DT 770 Pros would be the best for gaming, since they're better at producing bass. Any more opinions? I don't really want to get the DT 770 Pros and find that either the HD595s or A700s would be better for gaming without an amplifier.

Are you using an amplifier, and do you use either of them for gaming?

The AD700 are the cheapest out of the 700/900 series. They're only £54ish. They sound better than the A700's a lot of people say.

The DT770's would be better for non competitive gaming, as the bass on the explosions and such would be awesome. But, for competitive gaming I think the Audio Technica's would be a better choice due to the superior soundstage (from what I've heard).

Mmm, the A700 and AD700 seem like pretty good deals. I don't know if the DT770 Pros would have too much bass, though; i mean, will i be missing out on a lot of the mids with these phones?

you dont need an amp with the pro 80's! If you did amp them they'd probably blow the ad900's and hd595's out of the water though. Theyre already good, amping just makes em even better.

Seriously, to be reasonable though, ANY of these headphones are more than sufficient for gaming purposes. I think the next thing to look at is which would be most fun for you to listen to.

im using an amplifier but i think they will do fine without one..i rarely game but i think for gaming either three would be great
