Eric,
Here's a possible solution to your quest for great Stax sound.

Absolutely, Spritzer's the man when it comes to Stax amps.

I would buy one of those in a heartbeat if I had the dough (and Stax cans to power ; ).

Hi,

Indeed, it is (http://mjolnir-audio.com/?page_id=14) an interesting DIY solution to listen with more effectively a Stax SR-007 MK1.

Unfortunately, I do not have a SR-007 MK1 headphone but a SR-009 (balanced Version).

Otherwise, it would seem according FrankCooter, that the amplifiers high-end that you know on Head-Fi are not all suitable right for optimum coupling with the 009 (I quote : "I've heard the SR-009's many times, mostly with top-tier amplification and relatively high-end sources. Until recently I was disappointed. Instead of returning to the classical open and slightly warm sound of the original Omega's , it seemed Stax had opted for a more "modern" voicing with an emphasis on detail and extension at the expense of a harsher treble and slightly thinner mids. Basically they reminded me of a more refined 507 (which I own). I recently got the chance to hear the 009's on my own system, which is a sort of "East meets West" marriage of Metrum Hex source / DIY 845 DHT amp / SR-007. In this system the 009 was clearly superior to the 007."   Link http://www.head-fi.org/t/677809/the-stax-thread-iii/3285#post_10888977).

For listen a 009, It is better to prefer a tube amplifier and transformer, as the beautiful DIY amplifier FrankCooter with 845 tubes and transformers quality 1: 1 (see photo) :
FrankCooter electrostatic system : DIY 845 DHT amp / SR-007 (with a priori 1:1 transformers)

, or more modest solution that I experienced : combo RKV-Verto (and soon, its integrated form, and improved, the Luminare amp and its step-up voltage transformers 1: 5 or 1: 6 (http://www.attsaar.de/Rechts/KHV-Audiovalve.html)).

Indeed, for listen the 009 with more euphony, the amp solution with tubes and transformers (adapted) seem to give more thickness to the sound midrange, and treble thus appear more natural, softer and more pleasant to listen to, while remaining neutral, accurate and fair (just tone)).

Otherwise, I see no headphone jack or XLR on Bigir amps (with your link) for use with headphones Orthodynamics interesting, but not always easy to drive; I thought to the Hifiman HE-6, the JPS Abyss (or more precisely, his successor as I hope to be adjustable in height (for my big head)) and also the future Audeze "prototype Z" (1200 Ohms).

Indeed, I do not exclude to investing in the future in one of these headphones Orthodynamics, after the acquisition of Luminare amp (for Christmas ?), for more diversity (and for more fun)

In what way is an SR009 balanced different from a regular one, I thought that all the 'stats were balanced by nature ?

To me, it basically means that the SR009 sucks, if you need to "color" the sound at the amp, doesn't it ?

Because I plan on getting another stats amp [ when I've the spare money ] as well as keeping my BHSE, I've been looking on Birgir's website and saw two or three weeks ago that he'd in the pipes an amp to work best with the 009's.
I've recently been looking on Birgir's site and what was written about that amp is no longer there, or I can't see it.
I know Birgir has put that amp on hold while he sorts out other things, but if he does decide to eventually build that amp, then that's the one I'll try and get hold of.

Perhaps ....

Original / 009 (with Tubes + transformers amp) / 007 (with direct drive amp) / 009 (with direct drive amp)

Which is the most natural (and enjoyable) to see (hear for an headphone) (except the original at left) ?

(Nb: the second table, the more just for the tones (compared to the original) is slightly less detailed (smoother) than the original, and that the last table)
(Nb bis: the third picture is bleaker and colorful (warmer), but also detailled than the original)
(Nb third: the fourth picture is more clear, but also more bland and cold as the original, but is more detailed and more readable (in detail) compared with the two preceding tables)

Birgir's amps are only for electreostatic earspeakers.

I thought we were in the 1970's since we've been discussing methods (Virgo) of driving electrostats that became obsolete at that time.

That's actually a good analogy, except that the SR007 never sounded that warm to my ears, but that's me.

SR-009 balanced = no right-left imbalance

Ok so one that doesn't suck too much
