I haven't heard it with the HD-800 but have with the other cans and it's a great match.  I currently have the he-500 and they work very well together.  I know the hd800 can be finicky so I'll let someone with experience answer that questions.  This amp is a great value though.  Surely powerful enough for Ortho's and it has tiny bit more juice than the NFB-10.33 which I have as my b-rig.

Only thing that comes to mind is that the NFB-28 is considered to have a pretty clean/neutral dac section.  This may play against the hd800, but again I really am not sure having never heard the pairing.  But with the warmish sound of those other phones it's great/  Just make sure to use it balanced to get as much as you can out of it.

I haven't tried many custom cables, the only one I have is a Double Helix Molecule Extreme, and I really love it.  Peter was great to deal with as well.  Well worth the price IMHO.  Have heard good things about Norne,Toxic, Forza as well.  Probably can't go wrong, I know some people have preferred pairings within the cable market for different headphones.  I think there's a thread for each.

Zach!, it seems you and I are destined to be apart of the same threads my friend...that or we just have impeccable taste in all things audio., mhaha.

As to the NFB28 I heard it was good with the HD800s but not great, something like the conductor, Bryston, and Vahalla 2(which I heard with the HD800s beats out more expensive amps due to the synergy)

Yeah I was actually thinking the Bryston not the conductor but was not 100% at the moment, the Vahalla is a good price for the 2nd version and from what I have read (read only) sounds very very good with the HD800s.  Just a suggestion

imo, hd800+nfb28 is good but not outstanding, burson conductor is much worse.

800 is quite amp picky, apart some tube amp, m9 is the only ss amp that i have heard which could present all strength of hd800.

But the NFB-28 its can handel the power of hd800
