ATH-W1000X Thread!

I borrowed the w1000 and did not like it one bit. How does the w1000x compare?

What didn't you like about the W1000? I haven't heard it but if you list the traits you didn't like, I can tell you whether they still exist on the W1000X.

The most obvious flaw of the W1000X to me is a weird peak in the upper midrange. It drives me nuts. They aren't suited to modern pop/rock, but I use them anyway because the rest of the song sounds great.

Don't know what your budget is but the best i've heard them is with a Chord Mojo fed by a ibasso DX50

Yeah I can only agree with jcoops16
They sound awsome from a Chord Mojo.

Cheers

As a bit of an experiment I've spent the last half hour or so listening to them through the HP out of a 10 year old Denon A/V amp, trying different genres from pop - Taylor Swift, Sia then moved up a gear to Slipknot, Queens of the stone age then EDM - Leftfield. The source is the Caiman which itself is about 7 years old and wasn't that expensive, and the W1000x sound great, got my toe tapping thats for sure, not as good as the mojo though.

I think it doesn't take alot to make the W1000X sound good but man the Mojo is a source and amp all rolled into one and makes them sound amazing.

hey cyrano13
this is just me speculating, since I have W1000X and Nighthawk.
And since I now the HM5 fit the Nighthawks (don't have the pads) I can't imagine them fitting for the W1000X, because of the different form of both phones...

Cheers

Anyone tried using the HM5 Angled pads as replacement? Will it fit?

It will.  I'm using a pair of the thinner, first version of HM5 pads on my ATH-A2000X, its original pads are the same diameter as W1000X.  The pads will take a mild stretch.  The pads can even be stretched to fit the physically larger ATH-AD900X or AKG K553, so W1000X is definitely doable.

I would think those pads are far too thick for best sound, though, no?  Even v1 HM5 pads seem a little too thick to me for A2000X.

What will change on the sound signature if I use this pad?

I've tried both angled and non-angled with my pair.

I think the standard is less intrusive to the sound, that's only because the angled completely changes the sound.
I found them warm and slight swampy bass to begin with. Both of these things got worse when the pads where changed.
The bass becomes muddy but a lot more powerful. On the good side, they are now very comfortable.

On the angled pads, the bass just comes out as the "boom boom boom" sub-woofer kind of sound, and tends to lose control and also bleed into the minds.
So muddy sound overall....

The non-angled does the same thing on a lesser level, but makes them very comfortable.....so I went with these at the end. (The angled lives on my A2000X now
