ATH-W1000X Thread!

Any suggestions on an open can that sounds like the w1000x? I love the sound I get at work, and now it's time to replace the home setup to match.

Actually, I like the Hifiman HE 4 and the Beyer DYnamic DT 880 [the T1 would be useful as well]

But I think you'd enjoy either the Beyer Dyanmic T90, T1 or the DT 880 or the Hifiman HE 4 [NOT THE HE 400!]

Awesome, thanks for the recommendations! One last question, if I were thinking of stretching the budget a bit further, thoughts on something like the LCD-X/LCD-XC?

Honestly, I'd LOVE to try the LCD XC my self. It's a serious consideration of mine, I hear that the LCD XC has a upper mid range coloration simmilar to the W1000x, the LCD XC should be wonderful regardless! I mean Azudze Flag Ship Wood Closed back, should be an easy upgrade to the W1000X!

The xc isn't bad but the upper midrange isn't quite a coloration as much as it is a distraction. The breathy upper midrange should be smooth and detailed but on the xc it shouts at your ears and is a distraction.

I'm selling mine because I rarely use it anymore. It's a good can, at a good price, but doesn't really compare to my HD900's or W3000Ani's.

I'll have some A900x to try next week. If I like them, should I consider the W1000x an upgrade (same signature)?

I think they are quite different imo.
It's a no from me.

A900X - more balanced across
W1000X - enhanced bass response, more euphonic or colored in the midrange, but still mostly balanced throughout

IMO.

so you would choose the a900x for classical, right?

I'd say the 900X is the better all-rounder, while the W1000X is more restrained in terms of genres...
I'd probably pick the 900X for classical.

Another thing to consider is that the W1000X was significantly more comfortable because the wing system was more firm and tighter... But YMMV.
At 150-200$ the 900X is a good bargain, at 400-500$ the W1000X is not terribly bad but you pay a lot for the cosmetics and the sound is different, not necessarily better IMO.
