I've been looking around and now that I have alot of money for my new setup ( sold my hp-2/rs-1/ra-1) I am thinking about getting an k-1000. But before I do what do I NEED to power this thing ? Also where is the cheapest place to buy one ? I saw new one's off ebay for 500 ( buy now) so is there a place online I can get cheaper?

Headroom and Todd-The Vinyl Junkie sell them for $549. Not much more, and they offer better return policies. Worth it to support one of our sponsors, imo.

I have no experience with the seller on eBay, except that he's been there for a while, so I assume it's cool.

Sales do appear by the retailers (Headroom, TTVJ) from time to time. Used AKG's turn up in the FS forum here occassionally too

There're many highly recommanded "K1000 combos".
For example, K1000/RKVII, K1000/Fisher 400. K1000/SE9 or SE18...etc.
Personally I have used K1000 with Fisher 400, Marantz 2220B and SE9. I like Fisher 400 the best, and Marantz 2220B at a close second. You will need to change the tubes and maybe add a preamp for SE9 to show its best. (SE18 got an preamp built in, but I haven't tried it yet.)
Also change the stock adaptor cable is a easy ugrade. Build one or buy one, it's well worth it.

I've been very pleased with my nOrh SE9 and the AKG K1000. You can get into this combo, with the Equinox cable upgrade (which I recommend highly!) for around $1200 new. I occasionally see used K1000's floating around, but unless they are going for $300 or less, I'd buy new. That way you get the warranty.

If you're thinking about something that will power speakers, I've also heard the Fisher 400 driving the K1000, and it sounded awfully good. You will, however, need to update the 400 (hey, it's 30+ years old...caps, tubes, and such will need replacing), which will cost you $$ (more if you have someone else like the Fisher Doc do it for you), in addition to the cost of the unit.

If you need something that will also drive "normal" headphones, I'd think about the RKV...but it will cost you significantly more $$.

If all you want is a headphone rig to drive the K1000, I'd opt for the SE9. You will be pleased.

Um , so here's my new question ( forgive me if it's already been talked about a million times like every thing else). I can get a k1000 new and a se9 for like 900ish. I could also get a stax basicsystem II for 850ish new ( maybe less). And I prob could get a k1000 sytem for 550 used.
I'm a big jazz and techno ( don't really care to much about bass thoug). I enjoy Rock now and then. And classical when I want to feel detail crazy.

Which of these 2 is for me?

I'd go with the K1000 unless you can get all the way up to Stax 4040 which would be a hard decision.

THere is a very nice comparative review of K1000 vs. Stax in our stickied review section.

I've listened to my K1000 with an expensive ASL AQ-1005DT amp, and with inexpensive ASL Wave monoblock amps, and I could not hear any real difference. The K1000 sounded equally wonderful with both kinds of tube amps. It sounded better with tube amps than with solid state amps, however.

I use the K1000's with the nOrh SE9, and although the combination is a little bright with some recordings, it has left me with little to desire. I'm happy (hence the username).

Not to worry. As you age, the brightness will diminish.
