was that a pm? i thought it was in a post. man i'm going crazy. anyhow, yep it's very convenient. this way the solo can stay connected direct and clean to the 0404 for some headphone listening. but when it comes time for the speakers, i'll just unplug a can, plug in the preamp cable, fire up the sony to power up the speakers, and we're done. usually when i'm using speakers i'm not listening critically anyhow - i'm running around the place getting things off of high shelves for the wife, etc.

my friend wants me to get a subwoofer. but my sony doesn't have a sub out, and anyhow a new amp and new sub...might as well just wait until i can get a nice home speaker rig in the future instead of going incremental now. the speakers i have now are just for convenience - headphones are still #1 for just listening as a hobby.

Edit - how about this to convert one of my speakers outs into a subwoofer out?

Speaker Level Converters
spkadapter.jpg

Two of these are supplied with each Force, Titan or Maestro subwoofer. The Speaker Level Converter converts an amplified, (speaker level), signal to the line level signal required by the subwoofer. Not required for line-level hookup.

The converters may be installed directly in parallel with your main speakers. This can be done at the speaker outputs on your receiver or amplifier. Alternately you may put these in parallel with your speaker at your speakers input terminals. You may attach any type of speaker cables to the speaker cable end using either electricians twist nuts or a twisted, soldered and wrapped connection. If running shielded interconnects to sub, you will need to purchase RCA Female - Female adapters.

i decided against a sub for now- who has the cash for a proper one anyhow?

btw all this time i've been dissing my friend's monster cable ICs, then i find this out about my Wharfedales:

US models wired internally with Monster Cable(R)

I wonder if my model was made in the US or in the UK. I'll have to go check the box.

Jahn,

Wharfedale is a company owned by a Hong Kong audio conglomerate that also own Quad and now TAG McLaren/AudioLab.

Actually, any receiver, whether they have a line-level subwoofer output or not, can be used with a subwoofer. Almost all powered sub has speaker-level inputs. Some will say the internal crossover of the power sub will ruin the signal, but it comes down to the design of that crossover. REL Acoustics, a subwoofer specialist from the UK of the highest order, actually recommend connecting its powered sub through its speaker inputs (see question 2). Paradigm sells external crossovers that can convert the speaker-level signal to a line-level signal. And I believe Energy's subwoofers actually comes with defeatable crossover that can be bypassed completely.

Awesome answer, thanks! I'll be hunting for a sub someday then, that can plug right into a speaker out.

As for the Wharfedales, It was my impression that they were cobbled in the UK by loving workshop craftsmen - so much for my boutique dreams!

Jahn,

I have heard nothing but great things about Wharfedale speakers even since they were purchased. In fact, I see that Wharfedale has rebounded under the new ownership. Their products are still designed in the UK, and they even designed some ultra-expensive speakers for the Japanese market.

So how are the speakers coming along? I am thinking of getting a pair of Crystal for my mom's bedroom system for her X'mas present.

Let's put it this way - they sound great when turned up to, um, 7 O'Clock. These speakers are whispering - not the best way to burn them in lol. This weekend i'll be able to cut them loose. During the weekdays they usually get played later in the evening but before bedtime, so i can't crank em up. Don't worry - Michael Jackson will get his due on the Crystals tomorrow!
