Playing devil's advocate, since black surfaces absorb all colours, there is nothing for the scanner to receive, so technically it's still only detecting the whites. But idk jack **** about barcodes so whatevers.

Yeah I was about to say, bar code readers are usually a red laser, so scanning the black bars doesn't make sense. It probably reads the reflection off the white parts.

When I worked in a grocery store, some products had red bar codes instead of black...and they would never scan cuz the red light probably didn't register the bars as spacers, or were too difficult to interpret.
