Setting up a Schiit stack with my computer / headphones
Dec 9, 2016 at 6:39 PM Post #31 of 34
Hi again,

Another quick question, when i installed the Modi i also installed the drivers necessary to use the DAC in "expert" mode as it was stated in the manual, but i'm quite a neophyte and have no real idea of what it does. What sound quality should i select in the Windows sound options for everyday use with my headphones ? Music, movies, gaming.

Thanks.

I'd stick with 16 bits, 44.1 KHz as most audio files are of that nature. When you set the bits to a different bitrate than the original file, you let Windows upsample the file before sending to Modi. Modi's DAC has a built-in upsampler that is better implemented than Windows. By sending the original bit and sample rate of the file to the DAC, you bypass Windows upsampling feature and just use the DAC's built-in upsampler leading to better sound quality.

Wouldn't using bitperfect output (ASIO, WASAPI, KS, etc.) in the music player bypass the Windows setting regardless?

Yes of course. If one is using a program without ASIO, WASAPI, KS output, the next best thing is to use the default bit and sample rate that matches the file that is being streamed.
