Ha... does that imply there is a new i5 v2 coming soon ?

I am looking at the i5 vs the virtual dx200 or dx120 at the moment. :)

I just said, we won't do that. We have 3 to 4 DAP in our plan, some were under discussion, and some were in the middle of prototyping, but i5 v2 is not among the list, which mean IF i5 has a successor, it will likely be 2018.

Could anybody suggest me a 256 GB microsd which has experienced to work flawlessly with i5, maybe also using it to save music downloaded by streaming app as Spotify?

If I remember it right, only Sandisk and Samsung has released 256GB TF card, and they only have one 256GB model under each brand.

We have tested Sandisk 256GB, works alright, works alright during our test but Spotify is not on our testing list

Is it really important to have 256GB? The Sandisk 200GB is frequently discounted on Amazon, you can buy THREE 200GB cards at the price of one 256GB card if you buy at the right time:

These are the price that I noted on Amazon (US and UK) two days ago:

My suggestion is to use the TF card slot with maximum flexibility. Please do not treat the TF card slot as an internal memory, the good things about having a slot is to swap (almost hot-plugable) TF cards anytime you want. If you organize your music folders in advance, it would be easy enough to put your music on 2-3 cards and still be able to find them effectively.

Another option is to increase the total capacity of the DAP is by taking advantage of the OTG feature of i5. There are several feasible options:

OTG flash drive:
https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digital-128GB-Traveler-DTDUO3C/dp/B01M59PHE4/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1480337951&sr=8-3

I am tempted to buy this flash drive when I find try to find an example for this discussion. $40 for 128GB OTG Type C memory at USB3.1 performance, and its a dual head design so I can plug it into any computer, copy music files, and then plug into the i5 immediately.

OTG Card Reader:

You can add second TF card to the DAP, or if you don't mind the extra size, you can even add a full size SD card to the DAP.

OTG SSD:

Ultimately you can mount a SSD to the i5 OTG port, be reminded that the Type C output of i5 is limited, a Hong Kong users had tested and confirmed m.2 2280 ssd is workable with i5.

OTG USB A Adapter

This is a low cost solution, you can add any USB memory to the i5 as long as it won't exceed the power supply limit. The quickest option will be adding USB thumb drive as they should always fall within the power limit.

Every GB counts when you have large library as you gave us 32GB internal only...

256GB MicroSDs will go under 100 bucks in 3 months. Sure in one year from now we see 512 GB on MicroSD,

For the adapter solution to a USB A female I would suggest something like this to reduce stress for the socket:

As for USB C Flashdrives I wish SanDisk would make one of these also with USB C connector...

Anybody tried external harddrives with own WiFi?

No pressure, but I'm hoping the replacement meets your needs without issue.

I followed your pathway, Fiio X7, on returning yours I was a few weeks out on purchasing one.

The i5 has been on my shortlist for awhile, whilst enjoying the aforementioned and awaiting for the elusive EB explorer.

I'm hoping to dig deep in ones pockets following glowing reviews in the near future.

I bought a Cayin I5 last week and I am really pleased to far.
The sound is great, and I am managing to stream Tidal lossless successfully.
I have not tried the Tidal download as yet.

I have just tried some RHA T20 In ear phones with the I5, and they are really good.
Coming from spme Soundmagic E10's they are a revelation.

I am now thinking of new open backed headphones to replace my very old Beyer DT331

Can anyone recommend and open backed headphones for home that have a similar type of sound as the RHA T20, at around $250?

The memory capacity growth rate is much slower then expected as we are approaching the limit of current production technology. For the record, SanDisk introduced the first 128 GB microSDXC card back in Feb 2014, and a 200 GB microSDXC card in March 2015. The first 256GB microSDXC card was announced by Samsung in May 2016, so it takes 27 months from 128GB to 256GB.

Do you mean something like this?
