i was gonna get a headphone stand for my HD650s, but with my luck it would very likely tip over or i would brush against it while walking and make them fall...also was looking at a tape on headphone hanger for the side of my desk, but i dont like the idea of my headphones touching the side of my desk when i put them on the hanger cus i dont them to rub against the wood or end up getting scratched or dented over time.

so i took a white tee shirt and put it on the floor next to my desk and i use it as a "landing pad" for my headphones...i chose white because it stands out more and can be seen  in the dark, so i kinda trained my mind to never step on the white shirt and also since its soft i feel better about putting my headphones on it. so basically whenever the headphones are not on my head, i set them only on the landing pad, i dont ever put them on the desk either cus i dont want them to get scratched, and also cus i dont want to ever leave my desk quickly and get my foot caught on the cable and pull them off the desk!!!

is is a good idea?

also i was wondering, what causes ear pads to wear out? also i do wear glasses and i notice on the side of the pad it dents in where my glasses bars are....do any of you guys have 650hds that you wear with glasses?  what can i do to make my ear pads last forever? what makes them wear out? is it because people rub them on their ear when taking them on and off? when i put them on i try to put them on from the top so they clamp right at my ears instead of rubbing them to adjust the position.

thanks

That depends on your really but I personally won't have it on the floor to begin with. forget stepping on it, it's closer to dust and grime, and microscopic insects. Of course, I know how Americans and Canadians joke about how Asians leave their shoes by the front door and freak out when other people walk up the stairs with their shoes on, so feel free to assume it's just my "leave shoes by the door and bring me an A" parents.

They wear out due to the clamp force. If you want to extend the life of the earpads, primarily because they're $60 but also because when they wear out the sound changes, you have to reduce the clamping force by bending the metal headband frame.

Extend the earcups out to the wides setting, and then bend the exposed metal parts at the center of each. Hold it for ten seconds at a time. Then do the same closer to the gimbals. Repeat until the shape isn't totally round and when worn they "feel" lighter due to the reduced clamp (ie you feel them less on your head). Basically if it's just sitting on your head there won't be much force being exerted on them. Note though that the headband pad might wear out faster if the weight is hanging on that too much, but at least that's only $15 each.

i see, thanks a lot man! so what/where do you think is the best way to keep my headphones? do you use a hanger or does that put too much pressure on the band? does it scratch the headphone back when it leans against the desk or whatever?

otherwise thinking i'll pony up for this as a "buy it for life headphone stand"... and maybe get rid of my studio monitors and get some smaller computer speakers to make room to put the stand on my desk. i really like the way the headphones sound so i dont mind just getting some smaller pc speakers cus i mostly just use them only to play music for my bird.

btw u were right OMG, i took a closer look at them and the pads are filthy with dust and lint :frowning2: also i was trying to clean and a chunk of dirt or something went inside the metal net of the outside :'( what should i do?? i dont want to open it up and try to take it out cus i know i will only break it....whenever i try to fix stuff like this i end up making things worse...will it blow out with air if i play songs?

I just set it down on the table, especially since after relaxing the headband it won't fit in the padded box from Sennheiser anymore (also, even if it did, you can't close it right after using it, otherwise your sweat and oil on the earpads will be a problem). It will not scratch just by setting it down, it will only scratch if you drag it against that surface, so when you pick it up, literally pick it up - lift it straight up instead of dragging it horizontally. Some stands will put pressure on the headband pads, although if you use something like a kitchen rag rack the thin metal will fit in that gap between the bumps on the HD650's headband pad.

You can always just get one of those non-slip mats so these will take a lot more force to pull off the table, while giving it a softer surface to rest on. Note that "non-slip" doesn't mean your pants or belt catching on it won't pull it off, so just watch it when you move around where your audio stuff are.

Whatever speakers you get I'm more inclined to use a non-slip mat, and also you can keep that at a location that will make it less likely to drag it off the table, like behind the keyboard or mouse. No hanging so it won't even fall off the hanger and then on to the table.

The SPL of the drivers might be enough to damage ear drums but that's still not enough pressure to push that gunk out. There's no way around it, you have to open it and then clean it. Here's a guide:

right on man, thanks a lot for your help! very informative, also that video is quite nice, i didn't realize these came apart so easily :D though i think for now i will leave it as it is, don't want to rock the boat, and i dont hear any rattling or anything so i rather play it safe and leave it for now.

I wouldn't recommend keeping them on the floor. As ProtegeManiac suggested it's best to not do that. I have tripped over mine a few times and now I'm religious about keeping them out of harms way. A stand, or in my case a nice mesh padded bag is what I use. It holds the cables and headphones securely and keeps them dust and debri free.

ya i agree, i decided to clean up my desk and put them next to my speaker...is it ok like this or should i get a stand? whats the main beenfit of a stand over this? im mostly just worried it will fall off the stand...but i guess it could fall of this too lol :S

if i get a stand i want to get this one, everything on my computer is black, so the silver stand will be a nice aesthetic touch of detail that stands out. though i think the stand is only to take up less space and look cool, i may just save the 30 bucks and do this, but then again i may get it cus it looks cool lol.

edit: i decided to take it up a knotch and put an old tee shirt under the headphones on the desk....good cheap solution for now i think, will consider the stand in the near future. planning to move across country next week and have a nice new desk and chair <3 and hopefully ^ that stand too :D

though they do look a lot sexier without the shirt lol, so i think the stand will be a must... or maybe get a nice thin black tee lol

.i chose white because it stands out more and can be seen  in the dark, so i kinda trained my mind to never step on the white shirt

You'd step on them eventually.

You can use all sorts of things as a headphone stand.  If it stands up strong and has a top or an arm on it, it's a headphone stand.  People use coffee mug stands.  All sorts of stuff.  Look in the DIY headphone stand thread and click on view all pictures.

Laying headphones on the desk is fine, but you want them on a headphone stand because they look cooler on a headphone stand.

Keeping headphones on the floor is not a good idea, as sooner or later they may be stepped on. Perhaps you should get a banna stand to use a headphone stand, and keep it on your desk?

I thought you wanted to slow down the wear on the earpads? Bend the metal frame as I described above - that will go farther in achieving that goal than basically kind of like wearing the headphone loosely when you're not actually wearing it.

oh, i was hoping if i put them on the box over night for 1 night then they would get less tight which would make the ear pads last longer and then i could just keep them on my stand. but they feel pretty comfortable now so from now on i will just leave them on the shirt on my desk until i get my stand.
