For a company that makes one of the best headphones out there, it sure isn't winning too many fans on the headamp front. Then again those guys at Schiit are making some seriously good stuff.

IMO, their amps punch way above their weight in terms of value, compared to the competition. Mjolnir could be an endgame amp for just about anyone (unless you're into OTC setups), it outperforms most $2,000 rivals.

Many people prefer a warm sound signature - that's why Senn have produced the HD800S. Their amps are clean and accurate, not warm. That's IMO why many prefer other amps which probably add some colour. But sure, there must be other SS amps out there which are better - for a price!

FWIW, I'm quite enjoying the HD800S with the HDVA600 and find it to be a better pairing than with my Asgard 2 (which I suppose isn't saying much, since they compete at very different price points). I think the higher output impedance of the Senn amp works very well with the 300-ohm headphones.

Another thing I appreciate is that the HDVA600 is only consuming 7 W or less when I'm listening, compared with 30 W for the Asgard or much more for the Mjolnir or Ragnarok. The Senn amp stays perfectly cool, unlike the Schiit amps which could double as space heaters. Just a different factor to consider -- I always felt environmentally guilty burning 30 W of power for 1 mW of sound! Such is the price to pay for Class A.

It's strange, but I quite like the old Mjolnir over the Mjolnir 2 for the HD800 & 800S. Oh well, either is fantastic, but $500 for the first is a steal, IMO.

I did considered the HDVA600 to pair with my HD800S but of all things I wasn't comfortable with the size. Being deep instead of wide I can't stack it above anything lest I do it sideways. Almost calls for a space for itself.

Yeah, that was a problem for me too -- the HDVA600 is about an inch and a half deeper than the Yamaha integrated speaker amp that I wanted to stack it on.  I ended up making a little shelf for the amp out of some scrap maple I had lying around, so that I could stack them securely.

Nice solution. But I wonder what they're thinking? It's even deeper than all those shoebox Cyrus gear I used to have. Guess if it makes the HD800S sing, perhaps it's an oddity people can put up with.

Let me correct myself, looking at actual specs, it's not as deep as the Cyrus stuff. It just looks that way. Hmmm... maybe there's a space for it on my speaker rig.

Sounds like positive review of the HD800S than the LCD4.

How do you guys feel the HD800S works at low/very low volumes?

Very well, it is one of its admirable traits.
Some headphones seem to require high volume to sound correct - the HD800/HD800S hold their qualities at low volume.
